Chiasmodon subniger, or black swallower, has a large mouth that can engulf prey twice its size. Along with sizable teeth, these adaptations allow the black swallower to impale large prey items and swallow the animals whole. Its stomach can then distend to accommodate its capture. In the deep sea, where food is scarce, this is a useful strategy to ensure that you won’t go hungry!
