His light eyes narrowed a bit, but Izzy, sensing that Aidan was much smarter than the other two MĂŹ-runach accompanying Ăibhear, glanced around and called out for her dog.
âMacsen? Macsen!â
âHeâs coming.â Ăibhear walked out of the woods.
âWhat do you mean heâs coming?â
âGive him a second.â He stepped back and she watched as Macsen happily dragged a large bear into the clearing.
âOh, not again,â Brannie sighed.
Aidan blinked. âAgain? How often does he attack bears?â
âHe likes bear,â Izzy admitted.
âIt came up behind me,â Ăibhear explained, âand this one went for him like a bone.â
Brannie pointed at the bear. âMacsen took that down by himself?â
A valid question. Macsen enjoyed challenging bears, but it was usually Izzy or her troops who ended up taking down the bear so that the dog could eat his full.
Ăibhear walked closer, leaned in, and whispered, âNot really. I could see the bear was not happy and about to tear the dog apart so I just sort ofââhe shruggedââpunched him while the dog wasnât looking. Bearâs out cold. We should probably go before he wakes up.â
âWhy are you whispering?â Brannie whispered.
âJust look at him.â He glanced back at Macsen. âHeâs so proud of himself. I couldnât take that from him.â
Brannie rolled her eyes and walked around her cousin, slinging her pack over her shoulder.
âWhat?â he asked when Izzy continued to stare at him.
âNothing.â She started laughing and couldnât stop, walking after her friend. âNothing at all.â
