summary: Isabel runs interference for Layla, who is running out of time to teach Isabel all of high school biology, and Valentina, who is running her hands through Isabel's hair.
word count: 2.8k
In the blue corner, clutching a thousand-pound encyclopedia to her chest, standing smack in the middle of Valentinaâs doorway, frowning with a brow well-steeled by blood, sweat, and book dust from the first century, itâs Layla Fletcher. âIâm just saying that if you applied the basic principles of concatenation theory to your plaiting process, youâd be able to finish with the bubble braids before curfew.â
In the red corner, perching on her bed, a peacock turned bird of prey, clenching Isabelâs loosened hair into fistfuls of blonde tumbleweeds, coming into the ring with her usual poker-hot spoken sucker punches, itâs Valentina Furi. âWhy should I care about curfew? Weâre literally in my room.â Then, under her breath, âSure would be nice if you were out of my room.â
In the middle of it all: Isabel Armstrong, sitting on the floor a few inches from Valâs feet, newly saddled with the unbearable brunt of Layla and Valentinaâs brewing fight. You know, Valâs been dumping shampoos and scrubs and general slews of unpronounceable hair-shining sludge on her all afternoon, and those layers are barely providing enough protection to keep the whole back-and-forth from exploding her eardrums.
Sure, the pair of them have always been all gung-ho about doing things the right way, a.k.a. their way, which is a trait Isabelâs pretty familiar with, herself. Sure, Valentina dragging Isabel into her room on a pretense where physical contact would make sense is something thatâs been happening a lot, lately. Sure, Layla dragging Isabel into the library to powerslam her with knowledge is something thatâs also been happening a lot, lately, despite Isabelâs very best attempts at convincing Layla that any double-digit grade is the best she expects.
Hell if Isabel can ever be sure how theyâre arguing about hairstyling algebra.
Nerds. Aliens, really.
As the match (Layla: STUTTER SPLUTTER DOOR LOCKS) of verbal sparring persists (Valentina: GROAN EXPLETIVE AVAâS LOCKPICKING), Isabel considers her options.
On one hand, alone time with Val is in way short supply. Also, she still hasnât figured how to win whatever game theyâre playing now, with her being stuck on the floor and Val being awful secretive about her progress. (Layla: DIRECTION PRESCRIPTION REGULAR POLYGONS NERVOUS LAUGH) For all she knows, Cinderâs hiding beneath Valâs bedframe, branding her scalp with the Furi monogram as punishment for⊠something. (Valentina: SNARK SETTING TRENDS NAME-DROP LOW BLOW) But Isabel knows, deep in her gut, she and Val have the potential to be something; if she stays with Val, lets her fix a split end or a few thousand, thenâwho knows, you know? They could stop dancing âround something like the dumb kids they were at the Fairy Moon Ball. Stop using code like undone hair, excuses like contests without a finish line.
Stop Isabelâs worrying sheâs dead last in a race Val might not even be in.
Plus, Valâs face when she saw Isabelâs hair had grown to her waist? Yeah, no, thatâs something sheâs gotta burn in her memory.
On the other hand, Layla did ask for her time first. With a question instead of an order, too. (Layla: LONGWORDLONGWORDLONGWORD) Maybe she asked when Isabelâd been three-fourths-asleep and sheâd already written a whole curriculum for tonightâs study sesh in one of her many colour-coded binders with zero consideration as to Isabel saying no, but she asked. Politely, firmly, firstly. (Valentina: AUDIBLE EYE ROLL DEMANDING INTERROGATIVE) This was the thing about teammatesâ
A sharp sigh from Layla snaps Isabel out her funk. âI am here because Isabel agreed to be tutored tonight.â
And sends her straight back into the spiral. Agreedâs a real load-bearer in that sentence. Then, Isabel locks eyes with Layla, who is finally, finally managing to look as tall as she is in the face of a Furiâs⊠well, fury, and silently agrees Valentina oughtta learn that later. Layla presses on, lips pressed all Ms-Furi-like. âWe have a biology test this Friday, remember?â
âOh, please, I could catch her up on every chapter weâre covering in my sleep. Without making her fall asleep, by the way, as your instruction seems to do so wellâ"
Layla scoffs. Valentina pauses. Isabel facepalms. And here sheâd been hoping that the brightest bulbs in Unicorn Academy couldâve learned something from their dormâs last set of screaming matches.
Eh. Just one of many reasons sheâs never really been in the same weight class as them, brain-wise.
Ow, ow, ow. And she wonât ever be a contender, brain-wise, if Val keeps taking the ends of her hair like theyâre the toughest reins sheâs ever tugged on. âAre you saying Furis arenât natural-born teachers?âÂ
âIâm saying that your priorities currently lie elsewhere,â Layla replies, cool as ice. âAlso, how is it my fault that Isabel would rather run a triathon than go to bed at a reasonable hour?â
âHey!â Isabel interrupts. The other two look at her. Nice to know they know sheâs in the room, honestly. And she canât say Laylaâs wrong about either Valâs intentions or Isabelâs dedicated training routine, but she can try rerouting her roommate to a wonderful place far, far away where her newly grown spine wonât give Isabel a bald patch. âYou guys wanna break the harmony bond again? Man, just let Val do her thing.â
Valentinaâs iron grip loosens at last. Isabel whips her head around for two reasons: first, to confirm all of Valentinaâs yanking havenât paralysed her from the neck up; second, to wipe a big, smug smirk off Valentinaâs face. âAnd you â lay off Layla, so she can do her thing and gimme the crash course on cellular perspiration.â
âRespiration,â comes a prompt correction, courtesy of two voices.
A blink. âUh, duh. I knew that. You just heard me wrong âcause of all your yelling.â Neither speaker nor listeners are convinced this is the truth. Isabel sighs, then turns to face Layla again. âOkay, Coach, ready to listen and learn.â
âBut Valentina isnât doing her thing correctly, which I believe is why you are neither listening nor learning.â
Valentina freezes. âExcuse me?â
Isabel facepalms again, leaving just enough space between her fingers to see if Laylaâs fainted yet. Was this how everyone else felt when she stirred shit with Val? God, maybe Ava had a point with all her mushy friendship bracelet stuff. Food for thought, assuming the sharp chemical scent from all Valâs bubbly hair care stuff hasnât eaten her neuroses alive.
Laylaâs buried her face in her textbook, as if its gilded pages can protect her from whatever wildfireâs burning through Valâs throat right this second. She gulps enough air to last her to the bottom of the ocean. Then, off to the races. âYou comb her hair with your fingers even though you have several brushes at your disposal, which suggests you donât trust your own styling products enough to execute your vision, which is surprising, given your frequent bragging about brand names. You keep undoing your, well, minimal progress whenever Isabel speaks, which implies you would rather hear her voice than accomplish the task at hand, which is, for you, and for lack of a better term, very weird. And, even though Isabelâs ponytails donât exactly call for microscopic precision due to their diameter, you get so close to her scalp, it almost looks like youâre sniffing itââ
âHey, remember your cute little ice cave? The one Cinder will make a slushy the second I tell him to?â
Water off Laylaâs back. âYouâre capable of fixing Roryâs braids in less than five minutes. All you need to do now, so that Isabel can get an education and you can get your beauty sleep, is stop getting distracted byâŠâ She squints at Valentina and (a happily uneducated) Isabel, takes a moment to think through all her hypotheses. Very wrong hypotheses, hopefully. Isabel holds her breath. âHer usage of unicorn shampoo?â
âI get that sleeping a few feet away from her mightâve broken your nose, but itâs really difficult for those of us that do to ignore the whole barnyard musk thing. Unless youâre secretly using Mister Tansyâs lab equipment to make human shampoo sheâll actually use, youâll let me fix her braids, however long that takes, and youâll let me do it tonight.â Composed commentator Valentina makes a spectacular return, rambling on and on and on, letting Isabelâs brain turn off. Back to sneering, for her, back to acting like there isnât another reason they want some private time, for them. The conga line of justifications falls off her tongue with ease, tone distantly pissed, the way it would be if the dwerpins cooked her oatmeal a minute too long, far from the way Isabel thinks it should be if tonight was supposed to be another dâ
Isabel exhales.
Huffs, actually, if sheâs being honest. Which is something Valentina might never be, when it comes to the stuff that matters. Which is something she couldâve figured out sooner, probably, if not for all the concussions.
The sooner she accepts that revelation from Captain Obvious, the sooner she can focus on stuff that matters to her. Like setting up healthy competition with her hundred per cent platonic archnemesis, or figuring out a new reason to blow off Laylaâs lectures.
But, like, riling up Valâs mattered to her for a long while now, so she smiles a tight smile and mutters, âHere I was thinking I was special.â
Valentina smacks the back of her scalp. âAre you kidding me? I only fixed Cloud Boyâs braids because heâd somehow gotten all the gum heâd wanted to put on my heels in his own hair. This is obviously different.â
In spite of herself (and the slight sting of that slap), Isabel wants to hear her out. Easier said than done, with her traitorous ears being flushed to hell and back. Val presses onâ âLetâs just say thereâs a reason I wanted to do this in private.â âpauses; flushes, tooâ âAnd still want to do this in private, if you do.â
Something about the way she says that last part brightens a bulb above Isabelâs head. A smirk lights up her face as she spins around, the response on her tongue let out lowly and slowly. âSo that is what you meant by your hair is literally painful to look at, let me fix it tonight, or else.â
Balked in her ear, in that exact voice: âThat is so not how my voice sounds.â
âWhatever you say. Couldâa just asked me out like a normal person, you know. I wouldâve saidââ
Layla shuts her book with a jump-worthy thump. âLook, I have no idea what youâre whispering about, but for the sake of your enrollment, I hope it can wait until Saturday. This test is worth 0.5 percent of our total grade. Isabel, that could be the difference between a D and a C for you.â
Tempting offer. Before Isabel can respond (she isnât sure she can respond, really, without crushing Laylaâs heart like gym chalk in her complete and utter contentedness with scoring anything above an F-), Val leans in close. Itâs almost romantic, the brush of warm breath against skin. Almost, because she hisses like a spitfire: âWould you get her out of here?â
âAw, a question instead of an order,â Isabel deflects. Funny how quick Valentina Furi can get snuffed out by plain olâ Val, on occasion. âNext thing you know, youâll be sayinâ please and thank you.â
Her optimism is rewarded with a shove from a hair dryer straight to the muscled back. Isabel stands up with a perfunctory snicker. What? In Layla terms, itâs basically another law of the metaphysical universe: most of the time, Valentina knows best. Most of the time, Valentina is really annoying about knowing best, sometimes to the point of making things worse, but when it comes to throwing people out her room and leaving zero wiggle room for their return⊠yeah, Isabelâs gonna go with her judgement on this one. Even if that judgement is, like, as judgmental as humanly possible.
Arriving at the doorway, cocking her head to the side, âYo, come with me a sec.â
They take their leave under the heat of Valentinaâs laser vision, the hurricane shot out the hair dryer at their hinds. Isabel brings a hand up to the back of her neck, picking long strands away from sweaty skin. Handâs clammy, too, so beats her, if that even worked. Hourâs swallowed the hall in darkness, dashed by some faint blue and yellow lights further out. Good. Makes it harder to read Laylaâs expression as they exit.
âI take it youâve finally decided to join me in exploring the beautiful world of cellular biology.â Layla grins. Not hard enough, apparently. âA very smart decision.â
âThat I am not making.â
The grin drops. âAreâare you being serious?â A very good question. Just one sheâs not getting an answer to. âLetâs reiterate, you would risk a possible failing grade to get your hair done? And by Valentina, who, need I remind you, spends most of her time either pulling your hair out or indirectly making you pull your hair out?â
âLook, I appreciate you calling it a possible failing grade.â Isabel pinches the bridge of her nose. Half of her hopes the pressureâll break it. Pool of blood would get her out of explaining the electromagnetic properties of Valâs identity crisis between sparring partner and secret softie hairdresser. âAnd no offence, but this is the first time Valâs, like, invited me into her room with a temp below one million Fahrenheit, and Iâm not throwing away this shot just to bump my grade up to something without a minus. Dude, this is big. Proves things between her and I have been heating up for real.â
âHer and me.â A reflexive correction. A retrospective sputter. âWait, what do you mean heating up? Human-to-human transmission of Cornicove Fever has never been recorded, and its incubation period is far too shortââ
Isabel tsks, turns Layla around by the tense shoulders. âForget it. Câmon, roomie, youâll have way more fun at the library without some dummy like me asking you why cells do aerobics. Val just needs me tonight.â Could be the other way around. Could be another way around. Only one way to find out, Isabel figures, and Laylaâs standing in the way of it. Over her shoulder, flippantly, âCopy your notes at breakfast, cool?â And sheâs almost broken out into a sprint back through the hall whenâ
âYou should know,â Layla blurts out. âIâd originally planned on tutoring Ava this evening.â
Just what Isabel needed: another reason to feel bad for the girl whoâd taken it upon herself to drag everyone in Sapphire Dorm to graduation. She skids to a halt. Sucks air through her teeth, sympathetic. âShe bailed too?â
âFor a picnic with Sophia. What do you think theyâre up to now?â Flex of Laylaâs fingers against her bookâfour taps, quick succession. âBraiding each otherâs hair as well, perhaps?â
In the nick of time, Isabelâs saved all the trouble of thinking by Rory, top half in black-and-yellow uniform, bottom half decked in heart-dotted boxers, both halves endangering all of the dormâs decor as he shows off an essay (its title almost as large as its truly impressive grade of EMERGING) while still half-wearing a fluffy sleep mask. All these years, Isabelâs still not sure where he sleeps, if he sleeps. Doesnât matter, really. Important thing is Isabelâs sure he needs Laylaâs help a lot more than she does. She leaves Layla with a pat on the back, some recommendation she test how long Glacier can freeze a person in time right now, and makes her great escape.
Back at the doorway. She tries to shake some loose hair out her face. Fails. Tries to ignore the quirk of Valâs lips. Fails.
âI hope that,â Valentina says, âDidnât ruin this.â
âNah, you grouching at my roommate and kicking me out to kick her out was real cute.â Isabel says, sliding next to her on the bed. If the last few minutes have been any indication, waiting for an invitation with this girl was just waiting for trouble to interrupt. âSo was the offer to fix my hair. Or else.â
âI meant that I needed to fix the crime against eyesight that was your hair," Val says. Doesnât pass by Isabel, that sheâs started avoiding eye contact. "Nothing else.â
âYour priorities sure look like theyâre lying elsewhere right now.â
âStop talking that way.â
And they were back to the orders instead of questions. Nice while it lasted. Two steps forward and such. Besides, Isabelâs figured out a couple ways to level the playing field, whenever Val wanted to escape the moment on her high horse.
Her personal favourite: âMake me.â
Unicorn Academy Isaval Fanfic Pt 2
idk how relationships work and how adults talk so ignore the mistakes if there are any
The next day Valentina was in class with some other students. They were whispering about something. Val looked over. âHey, do your work! We have a reputation to uphold, remember?â she snapped. âWoah calm down Valentina. Havenât you heard the latest news?â Val turned around fully now. âSomeone saw Isabel kissing the new student!â Valâs eyes widened. Isabel? She wouldnât do that. Even if something happened, Isabel would tell me right? Valentina turned back to her work. She couldnât assume anything. She tried doing her work but couldnât focus. Everywhere Val went, all she could hear about was the Isabel-Sammi thing. One student even said âOh thatâs cute!â, this made Valentinaâs blood boil. She had to find Isabel right now. Back at the dorms Val was pacing left and right. She looked up at the clock. When would Isabel come? The other Sapphires entered. Val turned quickly. âVal⊠we heard what happened,â said Sophia slowly. âIsabel wouldnât do that!â protested Ava. âYeah, sheâs very loyal,â said Layla. âNot to mention but she likes you⊠like a LOT,â said Rory, extending his arms out to show the amount.Â
Val continued pacing again. âI know, I know. I donât want to assume anything but why hasnât she told me yet? Yesterday, Sammi came to talk to her privately but when Isabel came back she was normal!â She then plopped down on the couch, running her fingers through her hair. The others looked at her and sat down by her. âMaybe she thought it would hurt your feelings?â said Rory slowly. âI would rather have her be HONEST with me?â said Val a little louder now. âIâm sure Isabel will talk about it with you soon,â said Sophia, placing a hand on her shoulder. âIsabel wouldnât hide it,â said Layla. Ava gave Val a hug and they all left.
Isabel finally came back from her classes. It was a long day and she was extra confused. Everyone kept glancing at her and whispering. I wonder why? As she entered she saw Val. âOh hey Val! How was your day?â she asked like nothing was going on. Valentina looked at her. âIt was fine. How about yours?â she asked slowly. Isabel took off her boots. âEhh it was alright. Everyone kept on staring at me though. That was weird,â she said, still oblivious. Valentina sighed and cut to the chase. âIsabel, is there something you want to tell me?â Isabel slowed down and set her boots aside. âUhm, no why do you ask?â she said a little more nervously now. Val looked surprised. Why wasnât she telling her? âAre you sure?â Val asked again. âYes,â replied Isabel hesitantly. Val saw that hesitant. Isabel walked up to her. âIs everything alright?â she asked, brushing a strand of hair aside. Val moved her hand away. Isabel looked surprised.
Val turned around now. âWhy are you hiding it?â she asked softly. Isabel thought for a moment then realized. âHavenât you realized the whole school is talking about you two? Are you really that oblivious?â she asked a little louder. She turned around. âDo you even like me?â she asked, a little broken. Isabel froze. âI didnât want to assume. I thought it would be some sort of mistake. I even let you bring it up on your own but you didnât. Isabel, do you really want to do this?â she asked, crying now. Isabel couldnât move. âValentinaâŠI-I didnât want to hurt you!â â âWell now I am! If youâd just told me the truth earlierâŠâ Val trailed off. âWell let me tell you now. Sammi confessed to me that night and kissed me. I moved away immediately! I told her about us but I didnât want to tell you because that would upset you even more. Val Iâm sorry I shouldnât have kept it from you. From now-â â âIsabel please. Why do you do this? Iâve asked you so many times about Sammi. You always said she was just a friend but the interactions⊠and the way you just let her do it! Even if you pulled away, why are you telling me this now? Why canât you be more honest?â asked Val crying. âVal I didnât want to hurt-â â âPlease Isabel, Iâm not 5. I just want you to be honestâŠI- I think we should take a break,â said Val sniffling. Isabel looked at her pleadingly and then looked away. âFine maybe we should,â she replied, a little annoyed. Val didnât look back and went up to her room, leaving Isabel all alone.Â
Itâs been a few days now and the two are still not talking. The whole kissing situation had died down in the Academy though. People were focused on the boy who drank toilet water now. Isabel acted like Valentina didnât exist at all. So did Val. One time they got assigned to a group project. Isabel and Val were paired up. They did the whole assignment without talking to each other. âHow is that even possible?â asked Rory as he sat down at the lunch table. âI donât know but we have to fix this!â said Sophia. âI think there might be relationship books in the library,â said Layla. âI donât know about that guys⊠but we might have to let them figure it out on their own,â said Ava slowly. âYouâre probably right. Val would kill us from her glare alone and Isabel, probably physically,â said Rory covering her face with his hands.Â
Valentina was walking towards the table. So was Isabel. They glanced at each other. Valentina turned around. She canât have anyone asking questions. So she left for class early. Isabel saw this and rolled her eyes. She sat down at the table and ate her food silently. The others looked at her but said nothing. Even they werenât really speaking to Isabel that often now. Then Sophia spoke out. âYou seem to be eating well.â Isabel looked up, confused. âYou know Valentina hasnât been eating a lot lately.â Isabel paused. âHow does that concern me?â she asked. Ava was shocked. âHow does that concern you? She has been depressed ever since-â â âAva please. I only hid the matter because I didnât want to hurt her and even when I apologized sheâs still angry?â â âThat is true but it had a bigger impact on her. She trusted you Isabel and waited for you,â said Layla. âA bigger impact on her? What about me? Why am I always the one to be blamed,â asked Isabel, irritated now. âWeâre just saying you shouldnât have acted the way you did,â said Sophia. Isabel rolled her eyes and left.
During this conversation Valentina was in class. She sat down and was doing her homework, although she hadnât written anything down. âSo how long are you gonna stare at that paper?â asked Ms. Furi. Valentina looked up. âOh hey auntie. I was just thinking,â she said quietly. âValentina what happened? You look really washed out. Have you been eating?â Ms. Furi asked. She then stroked Valâs hair. Valentina looked surprised. Auntie doesnât really show physical affection like that often. âIs it about Isabel?â she then asked. Valentina looked up now. âHow do you know?â she asked slowly. âValentina, I'm your aunt. I know that you are dating Isabel. And I also know about the rumor that was going around.â Valentina looked shocked her aunt knew about all of this. âWell weâre taking a break now, so we're fine.â â âWhat did she say?â asked Ms. Furi. Valentina sighed knowing there was no escape. âWell she apologized but I just donât understand why would she hide it. I mean shouldnât she know better than hide it? Also, after the constant âsheâs just a friendâ(Adrien ahh⊠srry lol)âŠI guess I needed a break from that,â she admitted. Ms. Furi sat down by her. âValentina, you two are young and in a relationship. Which means mistakes. Isabel was probably confused on what to do. The least you could do is acknowledge that but I do understand where youâre coming from too.â Valentina thought about it. âOk auntie,â she finally said. Maybe she should talk to Isabel.
Isabel was in her room, thinking about what her friends had said. Maybe she really shouldnât have hid the truth. The only reason the misunderstanding elongated was because of that. She stopped throwing the ball and sat up. She stretched and got up. Then walked up to the door. Maybe she should talk to Valentina.Â
She paused at the door. On the other side Valentina was standing there. She stood still, hand still up about to knock. Valentina turned around about to lean against the door. Just then Isabel opened the door. Valentina fell backwards and Isabel caught her, surprised. Isabel looked down and Val looked up. Both of them blushed. Val got up quickly and patted down her dress. âYou ok?â asked Isabel slowly. âYeah I- I didnât know you were gonna open the door,â she replied, looking away. Isabel looked at her, blushing even more now. Itâs been a while since she looked at Val in the face. When did she go from gorgeous to extra gorgeous? Valentina looked back and waved her hand in front of Isabelâs face. Isabel snapped back into reality. âYou ok?â Val asked, laughing softly. Isabel's stomach scrunched up making her melt. Oh her laugh. How much she missed it. Valentina stood there awkwardly. âYeah Iâm ok,â Isabel finally said, rubbing the back of her head now. Valentina noticed her rosy cheeks and blushed.Â
Isabel looked back. Neither of them were talking, just standing still. Valentina sighed, "I'm sorry. I should have thought about your perspective. I-â Isabel suddenly pulled her in for a hug. âYou donât have to apologize. Iâm sorry for not considering how my actions made you feel.â Valentina hugged her back. Then she heard a sniffle. Was Isabel crying? Valentina pulled her back. Isabel looked at her and cried harder. âOh Iâm so so so sorry *sniff* I-I didnât mean-â Valentina wiped her tears and brought her in closer. âThere there,â she said, smiling. âLet it all out.â Once Isabel stopped crying she pulled back. Her nose was red now. She looked up at Val with those puppy eyes and lips in a pout. Valentina couldnât help but pinch her cheeks. (This is giving: Aww so cute! -Speedâs voice lol) âWho knew the tough Isabel Armstrong could look so cute when crying,â she said, still pinching her cheeks. Isabel was lowkey offended but Valentina was smiling now so she said nothing. Valentina hugged her. âI missed you,â she said softly. âMe too,â replied Isabel wrapping her arms around Valâs waist. âAre we ok now?â asked Isabel. âYes, yes we are,â replied Val. Then Isabel pulled back. âThen would it be ok for me toâŠâ asked Isabel moving in closer. Valentina didnât reply. Instead she leaned in closer too. They kissed for a long time. Isabel leaned more and more that Val had to step back each lean. Itâs been many days since they were like this. Once they pulled back they were out of breath. Valentinaâs lipstick was very smudged now. Half of it smudged on Isabelâs lips. âYour lipstick is smudged,â said Isabel, moving her thumb to wipe it off Valâs face. Val laughed softly, âI wonder why.â That laugh again, pulled Isabel back in for another kiss. Valentina leaned back in too. Once they pulled back. âYou gotta stop laughing like that,â said Isabel softly. âWhy does it make you nervous?â teased Val. Isabel didnât take her eyes off of Val and Val pushed her away lightly. âStop that,â she said, laughing. âOnly if you stop laughing like that,â replied Isabel, pulling her back in. The two stood there for a while before Valentina said she had to leave. Isabel tried to make her stay but Val insisted she had to go.Â
Once Val had left. Isabel plopped down on her bed. Her heart was racing, faster than when she goes on rides. âOh Valentina Furi,â she said to herself. She covered her flustered face with her cold hands to cool it off. She laid there for a while. Her mind went through all the memories her and Val had. She literally couldnât stop smiling. Valentina Furi was the only one on her mind. Valentinaâs laugh, her smile, her hair, her eyes, her lips was all that she could think of. Isabel then realized how silly she was being for almost abandoning all of that because of some other person. Well at least now she got her back.
Unicorn Academy Isaval Fanfic
this is my continuation after my rewrite of secrets revealed.
The Sapphires were back at the dorm now. Everyone was so happy that weekend was here. âOK!â yelled Rory. He then gave a smirk. Layla looked at him and tried to decipher that face. âOh noâŠâ she said. âLetâs play a game!â he said. He glanced at Valentina and then Isabel. Valentina saw the glances then she realized. Oh wait, we haven't revealed that weâre dating! Isabel looked at the anguish on Valâs face. She understood too. Valentina and Isabel still haven't officially told their friends yet. âNo. No games,â said Val and started to walk away. âAwww looks like someone is scared~â taunted Rory. Valâs face flushed and she sat down. âFine, let's play this game.â Isabel sat beside her wanting to experience the chaos unfold. The Sapphires sat in a circle. âTruth or Dare?â Rory asked Valentina. Valentina didnât expect truth or dare out of all the games. But she couldnât leave now, so she picked dare. Truth would lead to unwanted scenarios. Just as she thought she won Rory began grinning. âOk Val, I dare you to⊠ADMIT THAT YOU AND ISABEL ARE DATING!â â âWHAT! Thatâs more of a truth than a dare!â yelled Valentina. Her face was completely red.Â
âAHA! So it is true that youâre dating!â accused Rory in pleasure. âEEEEEK! OMG VAL!â squealed Ava. Sophia was enjoying the view, glad that everything was ok now. âI NEVER SAID THAT!â Valentina blurted. âWell technically youâre implying it,â said Layla, adjusting her glasses. Isabel looked at Val and took her hand. Everyone went silent now. Val looked back and calmed down. She sighed, âYes. We are dating.â Ava looked like she could explode any minute now. Sparkles practically flying out of her head. âBut donât make a big deal out of it!... or anything,â said Val, looking away. âThatâs all I needed to hear,â said Rory. He then laid against the couch, looking pleased with himself. âWell weâre off to bed,â said Sophia. She gestured everybody else to follow. The others understood and left quickly, leaving Valentina and Isabel behind. After everyone left, âSooo~ donât make a big deal out of it. Huh?â asked Isabel. Valentina slightly pushed her, jokingly. âHey! I thought you liked me,â teased Isabel.
Valentina got up, ready to leave. Isabel got up too but held her back by holding her hand. Val looked back. âWhat?â she asked, smiling. âWhere are you going?â Isabel pouted. âTo sleep,â Val replied. âWant me to come too?â teased Isabel. âUgh no-uh!â Valentina said in an âannoyedâ tone. Val rolled her eyes and tried to leave but Isabel continued to hold her hand. Isabel looked up at Val like she wanted something only Val could give. âWhat is it?â Val asked slowly. âWell I was wondering if you couldâŠâ â âIf I could?â Val stepped closer, tilting her head. âWell⊠give me a goodnight kiss,â said Isabel without any shame at all. âWow! Look at you. Where did all this confidence come from?â Val continued to step closer like personal space wasnât a thing. She then leaned in closer and⊠gave Isabel a kiss on the cheek. âThatâs it?â asked Isabel, disappointed. âWhat? That wasnât enough? Youâre being so demanding!â Val teased. Isabel then pulled Valentina back in and kissed her. Longer this time. Once they pulled back, âThatâs how you do it,â said Isabel, proud of herself. Valentina rolled her eyes, still blushing and smiling. âWell goodnight!â Val chirped then left. Isabel stood there for a moment then quickly ran after her. âWait for me! Iâll walk you to your room.â called out Isabel. Val rolled her eyes but still offered her hand to Isabel. âYou know weâre literally in the same dorm right?â â âYeah I know but if something happens, I gotta protect you,â said Isabel. âProtect me from what exactly?â asked Val, amused by Isabelâs behavior. âWell everything. Youâre a Furi after all.â â âWell weâre here at my room so goodnight my knight,â interrupted Val. She went in her room, leaving Isabel flustered.
Itâs Saturday now. Valentina got up extra early this morning. She had a special job today. She had to show a new student around. She was at the port where a girl came off the boat. Valentina walked forward examining this girl. âHey Iâm Sammi!â she chirped. Sammi was the same height as Val and had short black hair with wispy bangs. She was wearing jean shorts and sneakers with a hoodie. She had this cute attitude which made Valentina a little suspicious. But Valentina was always suspicious of newcomers. She needed them to uphold Unicorn Academy. âYes, hello. Iâm Valentina Furi and Iâll be showing you around.â She glanced at her, expecting Sammi to recognize Furi, but Sammi didnât. Whatever, she's probably the first one in her family. Valentina thought. Val showed her around the school and along the way they ran into the Sapphires.
âHeyy Val!â shouted Ava. âIs this the new student?â asked Sophia. âYes this is Sammi,â said Val. âWell Sammi, Iâm Rory. Pleased to meet you,â said Rory dramatically while bowing. Layla pulled him back up. Sammi giggled at the boyâs behavior. Then Isabel came forward but paused. Her eyes widened. âSam- Sammi?â she stuttered. âIsabel?â asked Sammi in return. Valentina looked at them both. She started to get an uneasy feeling. âWoah! I canât believe youâre really here!â said Isabel excitedly. âWhen- How-â stuttered Sammi. She ran up to Isabel and gave her a big hug. Isabel was caught off guard but pulled back immediately at the sight of Valentina. Valentina looked at them confused, including the other Sapphires. Sammi held Isabelâs hand, âNow I know that youâre here. My stay is going to be a lot more fun!â chirped Sammi. âIsabel, you know Sammi?â asked Val, glancing at their hands. Isabel pulled the hand back and adjusted her jacket's cuff that didnât need to be adjusted. She chuckled nervously. âYeah we know each other from way back! We used to date!â replied Sammi for Isabel. Val couldnât get a word out of her mouth. We used to dateâŠdateâŠ.date. That word repeated in her head. Once she snapped back she glanced at Isabel. âOh really?â she asked, crossing her arms now. âBut weâre friends nowâŠheheâŠâ interrupted Isabel. The others were basically melting from the tension.
âIsabel never told us she dated someone before,â said Val tilting her head. Isabel wanted to say something but Sammi interrupted. âOhhh~ Iâm surprised you didnât mention me. You used to talk about me all the time with other people,â teased Sammi. Isabel lowkey hit the Speed face. âYeah yeah. But you know⊠so much work⊠barely any time to talk,â Isabel said, voice cracking at talk. Sophia got goosebumps. She couldnât handle the awkwardness anymore. âHey Sammi, you wanna see the student lounge? There are snacks. Special ones from the island!â She gestured to the others to follow along. âYeah theyâre super delicious!â said Ava quickly. Layla and Rory nodded. Then the others took her away, leaving Isabel and Val alone. Isabel let out a huge breath then looked up. Val was tapping her feet and had her arms crossed. She raised an eyebrow. âYour ex. When were you gonna tell me about it?â she asked. Isabel looked at her. âWaitâŠare you jealous?â she asked. Val looked away. Isabel took Valâs hands. âValâŠWe used to date. Now weâre just friends.â Isabel moved a stand of hair away from Valâs face. Val looked at her now. âBesides, I like you more,â she finished. Val relaxed a little, a little.Â
Itâs been a few days now. All the words Isabel said that day when Sammi came was starting to lose effect on Val. Everyday she would see them hanging out together. Sammi would link arms and laugh at Isabelâs jokes. In the beginning Val would just ignore it but now? Valentina felt something. Jealousy. She started to talk less and less to Isabel, thinking the lack of interaction would reel her back in but it didnât. Isabel was occupied by Sammi. Valentina felt this rage start up inside of her. On the other hand, Isabel wanted to find times where she could be with Val but Sammi was always there. Isabel didnât know how to leave without hurting Sammi because every time she said that she had to go, Sammi would always pout. Isabel tried telling Sammi that her and Val are dating but Sammi would always interrupt her before she could even start the sentence. Besides it was kinda nice hanging out with Sammi again so she thought Val would be ok for a while. But boy was it the wrong move.
Back at the dorms, Isabel came late. She was tired after going on a long ride with Sammi. As Isabel entered she came face to face with her friends. They all looked very disappointed. âWell look whoâs back,â said Rory. Isabel was confused. âHey guys⊠why are you all looking at me like that?â Sophia cut to the chase. âIsabel. Where were you? Youâre late again.â â âValentina was waiting for you,â said Ava. âAnd sheâs not happy,â finished Layla. Isabel rolled her eyes. âI was just hanging out with Sammi. Why does Valentina even care?â she said, a little annoyed now. Before the others could speak, Isabel went to Valâs room. She knocked on the door. âVal, it's me. Isabel.â She heard shuffling from the inside then the door opened. Val looked at her with no expression. Isabel sighed. âCan I come inside?â she asked. Val let her in and sat back down in her bed.
âSo what is it?â asked Isabel. Valentina didnât look up. Instead she took her nail file. âWhat is what?â she asked. âYou know what Iâm talking about.â Valentina brought the trash bin closer and dusted off her nail dust in there. âNo I donât,â she replied. Isabel sighed and sat by her. âValâŠâ Valentina continued to file her nails. Isabel took the nail file. âHey!â â âWill you look at me?â Valentina looked at her. âI donât know why youâre still jealous. I told you Sammi is just a friend. Itâs been a long time since weâve seen each otherâŠso weâve been spending time together.â â âA lot of time,â Val pouted. âYeah I guess so,â Isabel chuckled softly. Valentina crossed her arms. âWhat? Iâve been trying to find time to be with you but she⊠keeps on persuading me to stay.â â- âWell tell her that you need to spend time with your girlfriend. Me?â Isabel smiled at Valâs pout. âI tried to but she- Well. You know what, I promise that I will spend more time with you. Ok? All of tomorrow.â Isabel squeezed Valâs hand gently and got up to leave.
Val held her back. Isabel looked back. âYouâre gonna leave? After spending so much time with her, the least you could do is stay here for a while,â said Val quietly. Isabel smiled and sat by Valentina. The two were now tucked in Valâs bed. Val laid her head on Isabelâs shoulder and made herself comfortable. Isabel held Valâs hand, rubbing it gently. âI never thought youâd be so jealous. Youâre Valentina Furi. How can you be?â teased Isabel. âWell when you have Isabel Armstrong as a girlfriend, itâs not possible to not be jealous,â said Val gently. Isabel was surprised by Valâs answer. âWow. I am so honored,â said Isabel dramatically. She then lifted Valâs face by the chin. âYou know itâs cute how you pretend not to care when others are around but when itâs just us you melt completely.â Isabel leaned in for a kiss. Val leaned in too. They kissed for a long time. Isabel pulled back but Val still had her eyes locked onto Isabelâs lips. Val leaned back in for another kiss and Isabel didnât reject it. Val kissed her like Isabel just came back from war or something.
Once they pulled back they were basically out of breath completely. âOh wow. You really did miss me,â said Isabel, surprised but laughing quietly. âYes, yes I did,â said Val. Soon after Val had fallen asleep on Isabelâs shoulders. Isabel noticed this then adjusted Val so she was laying down. Just as Isabel tried to leave Val held her back once again. âPlease donât go,â she said, half asleep. Isabel shook her head. âAlright. Iâll stay for a few minutes.â Then she laid down beside her, staring at the ceiling. Valentina moved in closer like space wasnât allowed. Val had snuggled in beside Isabel. Isabel started to blush. This was new. Sleepy Val was a whole different person. It wasnât long before they both drifted off to sleep.Â
It was morning now. Valentina got up first. She wanted to get up but didnât want to leave the warm sensation. She opened one eye and saw Isabel. Oh itâs just Isabel. WAIT ISABEL! She got up so fast, blushing so hard. Isabel felt the sudden movement and sat up quickly. She had her karate hands. âWhat! What happened?â she said, still half asleep. Valentina was still blushing. She canât believe that they slept together! Isabel looked at her, squinting her eyes while Val was still in the same position. The two were like that for a moment. Then Isabel opened her eyes and started blushing. WE SLEPT TOGETHER! âEHâŠGod Afternoon. I-I mean good after- m-morning!â Isabel moved back and fell off the bed. Val finally moved to check if she was ok. âIâm OK!â said Isabel. She sprung up. âUmâŠsee you later?â Then she sprinted out of Valâs room. Val still hasnât stopped blushing.
The Sapphires met up at breakfast. Neither Valentina nor Isabel talked about what happened. Layla looked up from her book. âSo Isabel, it looks like you had a good night's rest,â she teased. Isabel choked on her water. âYeah! Rest! I had sleep. Sleep is goodâŠfor races.â She was blushing. Valentina looked away, covering her mouth, trying to hide the smile. The others just laughed. Just then she saw the one person she didnât want to see, Sammi. Valentinaâs smile disappeared instantly. Isabel looked at Val and then at the reason. âIsabel!â Sammi called out. âDo you want to go for a ride?â she asked. Val looked at Isabel, crossing her arms. Isabel saw her look and got up. âOh actually Sammi I canât today. I was gonna ride with-â â âOh come onnn. Donât you remember the bet we made yesterday?â Sammi pouted. She then took Isabelâs hand. Valentina got up now. âThereâs been a change of plans. Sheâs actually going on a ride with me.â Rory sunk into his chair deeper now. Ava sipped her water slowly. Layla pretended to show something in the book to Sophia. âYeah sorry Sammi. Not today,â said Isabel as she moved her hands away. âOh ok then later today?â asked Sammi. âActually sheâs booked for all of today,â said Val, more impatient now. Sammi felt something was off. âFine tomorrow then,â she said to Isabel. Sammi hugged Isabel then left.
âUgh, doesnât she know when to stop asking?â said Val, poking at her fruits. âWell donât worry about it. Sammi is just like that. Sheâs very persuasive. Thatâs why I dat-â Isabel stopped abruptly. Val looked at her. âThatâs why what?â she asked. âN-nothing! Letâs go for our ride,â said Isabel quickly. Then the two were off. Rory let out a huge breath. âIâm glad thatâs over now.â â âYeah it was getting really stuffy,â said Layla, finally taking her eyes off her book. âGlad Iâm not in a relationship,â said Rory, leaning back on the chair. âI donât think anyone would want to be in one with you,â mumbled Sophia jokingly. âHEY! I heard that!â yelled Rory. Then the group erupted in laughter.
Val and Isabel were on their ride. Isabel kept on flexing and trying to do dangerous tricks despite Valentina telling her not to. âIsabel for the last time you guys are not doing a back flip. Youâre gonna break your back. You and River!â â âI say we got it. What do you say buddy?â Both Val and River gave her a glance of disapproval. âOk, fine.â They reached the end of their trail. âWanna race back?â asked Isabel. âOh youâre on!â â âOk⊠ready set GO!â â âIsabel! Thatâs not fair,â yelled out Val, laughing. The two finally reached back to the outskirts of Unicorn Academy. âWe won River!â said Isabel pumping her arms up. âUhm. No you didnât. Me and Cinder did,â said Val, petting Cinderâs mane. âNuh-uh. Me and River did,â said Isabel. Valentina raised an eyebrow. âFine, you and Cinder won. But you winning basically means I won too,â said Isabel, placing her hands on her heart. Valentina rolled her eyes. âCome on, we better get back soon. Itâs getting dark.â Then the two made their way back to the stables.Â
Valentina brushed Cinderâs mane. Then she heard shuffling behind her. âWhat is it Isabel?â she asked. Isabel walked in the stall, suspiciously. Valentina looked at her, raising an eyebrow. Isabel pointed at her lips shamelessly. Valentina rolled her eyes. âFine, but only one,â she said, laughing softly. Isabel blushed. She went soft whenever Val laughed like that. The two leaned in closer and closer. Then they heard a noise. âIsabel?â They pulled apart quickly, regaining their composure. They both looked out the stall to see Sammi. Valentina's mood immediately worsened. âOh hey Isabel, I want to talk to you. Do you have a moment?â she asked. âWell now she does cuz you ruined ours,â mumbled Valentina under her breath. Isabel looked at her and back at Val. âSure, whatâs up?â asked Isabel. âOh uhm, privately?â asked Sammi, gesturing to go outside. Isabel looked back at Val but left with Sammi. Valentina was left alone, brushing Cinderâs mane.
Outside near the trees, âWhat is it Sammi?â asked Isabel. Sammi sighed then took Isabelâs hand. Isabel looked confused. âI have been wanting to tell you this for a long timeâŠI donât know why butâŠever since we started hanging out again, I just-â she paused. âI LIKE YOU!â she blurted. Isabel looked shocked. Just as Isabel was going to step back Sammi stepped in and kissed Isabel. Isabel pulled away immediately. âSammi! You canât do that!â she yelled. âWhy?â asked Sammi, a little hurt. âIâm with VALENTINA.â Isabel was angry now. âOh- Iâm sorry. I didnât know,â said Sammi softly. âIf youâd just let me talk then you wouldâve,â she said coldly. Then Isabel left, leaving Sammi alone. But was she really alone? A student who was around the area saw everything but didnât hear the conversation. And you know how rumors spread right? Isabel was back at the stables now. She looked pissed but hid it when she saw Val. Val looked at her. âEverything alright? What did she wanna talk about?â she asked. âOh itâs nothing,â Isabel said normally. Isabel couldnât tell Val about the kiss. It would break her heart. Or maybe if she didnât tell, would it break her heart? Isabel was confused but didnât mention anything. âLetâs head back,â said Isabel, taking Valâs hand. Val intertwined their hands and they both left back to the dorms. Isabel was glad Val didnât notice anything.

Isaval's date
It was the next day. Isabel woke up extra early and got ready. She was gonna ask Valentina on a little picnic date. At least this way she could help Val not stress about the gemstone for a while and also to get some alone time with her. Isabel knocked on Valâs door. Then she heard some rustling. Val opened up the door, she was still in her pajamas and was half asleep. Isabel smiled immediately at the sight of her. Isabel gave Val a little kiss on the cheek which woke up Val immediately. Her eyes widened and she pulled Isabel in the room quickly. âWhat are you doing Isabel? What if someone saw you?â said Val rubbing her eyes. âI have a surprise so I want you to get readyâ, replied Isabel, pushing Val to the bathroom. Valentina rolled her eyes and got ready like she asked. Isabel waited outside for Val. Valentina came out, looking for Isabel. Isabel saw her, she stood there, just staring at her. Maybe itâs because theyâre dating now but Val looks extra beautiful today. Valentina noticed Isabel and walked up to her. âWhy did you wake me up so early, Isabel? Itâs Sunday and Iâm still a little sick.â â âI know, I know. Iâm sorry about that, but I have a surpriseâ replied Isabel. She then took Valâs hand and brought her to the fields. They sat underneath a tree. Valentina noticed all the picnic items. âWhat is this?â she asked, taking Isabelâs hand. âWelcome to our picnic dateâ, said Isabel proudly. Valentina smiled. Isabel was so thoughtful. She then noticed the cookies. âYou know how to bake?â asked Val. âWell not really but I learnt it for youâ, replied Isabel. The two sat down and chatted. Valentina tasted the cookies. They were absolutely disgusting. âSo how is it? Amazing right? asked Isabel. Valentina looked at her, while munching on the cookies slowly. Isabel looked so happy, Val couldnât say that they were bad. âUm, itâs great. Can I have some tea?â Valentina asked so she could wash it down without being weird. Isabel nodded. After the two rested, leaning on the tree. Their shoulders brushed. Isabel looked at Valentina. âSooo, now that weâre aloneâ, she said with a grin. Val looked at her and took a moment to process. Then she realized. âNow that weâre alone?â asked Val, teasing Isabel. Isabel pouted, âCome on you know.â â âHmm I donât though?â said Val, enjoying how her teasing was annoying Isabel. Isabel turned away. Val chuckled quietly and then turned Isabelâs face around. She brought her face closer, slowly. Isabel did the same, until their lips finally met. Isabel moved her hands to Valâs waist and Val moved her hands onto Isabelâs shoulder. They were kissing for a while until Val finally pulled away. They were both blushing. Then Valentina moved in closer and wrapped her arm around Isabelâs, then laying her head on her shoulder. The two just sat there, with their backs against the tree, looking out on the fields. Soon enough they both had drifted off to sleep, tired from waking up early.
