ren wants to be mad when she walks into the main room of The Last Man, during off hours, to ... well, the only way she can really think to describe the scene before her is a mess. there's splatters and piles of silly string pretty much all over the countertop, mostly concentrated in front of the obvious perpetrator ; @isafell.
she wants to be mad. she's holding a box of the new coffee cups she'd ordered last week. she'd been looking forward to a chill, easy afternoon doing inventory and swapping the old cups out. but now, well. now she's staring at a kid holding what she can only assume is now an empty can of silly string, smile so incredibly endearing that she can't be mad.
god fucking damn it.
ren sighs as she drops the box on the ground behind the counter across from laurent. she plants her hands on her hips, fixing him with a disapproving glare. even if she can't bring herself to be mad, she can still try, at least for a second.

If there's one thing Steve is determined to make sure of it's that all these kids make it out of all the shit that comes with living in this hellhole of a town - safe, alive and with a future they deserve.

it's been an adjustment, being around other kids again. which is a bit of a misnomer, right, because jordan hasn't been a kid for a while, and that's not even counting the fact that ren only met her after she was already older than laurent.
but, like, still. it's been a while since ren was around anyone that wasn't all grown up and damaged and cynical. kids are just ... y'know, brighter.
despite all of that, though, ren likes laurent. he's smart, and even if he's not untroubled ( who the fuck is, nowadays? ) he has this way of reminding ren that things aren't always as dire as she might think they are. like, stop and smell the roses, and all that shit. which is a bit on the nose considering the flower he just snuck into the crown of her hair, but whatever.
ren smiles at him, because how can she not. one hand lifts, slow and delicate, to press against the soft petals of the bud. โ did you pick this just for me? โ
