The hallway was loud, full of lockers slamming and sneakers squeaking, but I barely noticed. My squad was ahead, laughing about some dumb joke I didnโt really care about, and I just wanted to get to my next class without tripping over anyone. I kept my eyes forward, ponytail bouncing, earbuds tucked in, pretending like I was the only person there.
Thatโs when I felt eyes shooting holes right in my head โ Will Byers, standing by his locker, frozen, staring straight at me. He shivered and grasp the back of his neck. Something in the way he was looking at me made my stomach flip. I wondered if they were talking about me, though I couldnโt get an idea of why. Itโs not like I had talked much to either of them. I had biology with Mike, the only time I really talk to him was when we had a project together in like seventh grade
I did, however, talk to Lucas quite a bit. When Lucas joined the basketball team, he started talking with me and he seemed pretty nice. Our friendship has been growing ever since and it easy to laugh with him then most of the other basketball boys.
But nowโฆ I couldnโt shake the feeling that Mike and Will were looking at me like something was wrong. My stomach twisted. I tried to brush it off, telling myself I was imagining things, but even from across the hall, I could see Willโs hands trembling slightly against his locker. Something was definitely off and I had a sinking feeling it had something to do with me.
MIKES POV
I could feel it the second I got close to him. Will was frozen by his locker, pale as if someone had drained the color from him, hands gripping the edge like he was trying not to fall through the floor. My chest tightened. Not again.
โWill? Dudeโฆ whatโs wrong?โ I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. He flinched like Iโd shouted, but it was just my words. His eyes were wide, darting down the hallway, and I followed them.
I turned my head, following Willโs gaze, and thatโs when I saw her. (Your name) Turnbow. She was walking past, hair bouncing, earbuds tucked in, totally oblivious to the hallway chaos or to us staring. My chest did a weird flip, even through the panic. She lookedโฆ bright. Like she belonged in the sunlight, not in the shadow of whatever the hell was creeping into Hawkins.
Gosh, she was so pretty. Mike had always had a bit of a secret crush on her ever since 7th grade when they got paired together for that stupid plant-cell project. Heโd been convinced she was gonna be one of those rude popular girls who acted like they were too good for everyone else. The type who would roll their eyes, laugh with their friends later about getting partnered with โWheeler the weirdo.โ
But she hadnโt been like that.
Not even close.
To Mikeโs surprise, Y/N Turnbow wasโฆ nice. Actually nice. Sheโd smiled at him, sat next to him like she wanted to be there, and didnโt treat him like he was invisible. She didnโt dump all the work on him or try to flirt her way into an A. She cared. She tried. They shared snacks during study sessions. She asked him about his favorite games. And sometimesโjust sometimesโshe laughed at his jokes like he wasnโt a complete dork.
They got an A+ on the project.
โIโm glad it was you I was stuck with, Wheeler,โ sheโd said, leaning into him just a little, her shoulder brushing his.
Mike had turned red so fast he nearly passed out. He could still feel the warmth of her against him, even now. The memory hit him like a punch, sharp and warm, and he felt himself blush before he could stop it.
And then he looked at herโwalking past him now, older, prettier, brighter than he rememberedโand the blush died out, replaced by a cold, creeping fear.
Because Will wasnโt staring at her for no reason.
And Mike felt it too.
That wrongness.
That heaviness in the air.
That same sick feeling Will had felt before Derekโฆ before everything went bad.
Mikeโs breath caught.
Y/N Turnbow was next.
HEY YALL THIS IS MY FIRST EVER TIME WRITING AND I GOT SCARED SO LMK IF I SHOULD CONTINUE ๐๐
