The basic idea behind migration testing
Migration testing is a category of food-safety methodology that asks a simple question: when this material is in contact with this food, how much of the material's mass actually migrates into the food during normal use? The regulatory framework sets a maximum allowable migration. Materials that test below the maximum are certified safe for the food-contact application. Materials that test above the maximum are not.
IS 9845 is the Indian Standard implementation of this methodology. The Bureau of Indian Standards specifies the test conditions (temperature, duration, food simulant choice based on intended food type) and sets the regulatory limit at 60 milligrams of total migration per kilogram of food simulant. For drinkware intended for hot beverages, the test is conducted at 100°C with food simulants representing the beverages the cup is intended to hold.
A cup that passes IS 9845 at 100°C has been independently tested under conditions more aggressive than realistic chai or coffee service, and the measured migration is below the regulatory limit. The pass is documentary. The methodology is standardised. The limit is established by regulatory authority. This is the substance behind any defensible safety claim from a bio-composite drinkware vendor.
Concrete framing of 60 milligrams per kilogram
The number can sound abstract until you frame it concretely. Imagine a 300ml cup of hot chai. Two hours of continuous immersion at 100°C is much longer and hotter than a cup of chai consumed in 15 minutes at 90°C. What the test does not cover
Honest framing of safety also requires honest framing of what the test does not cover.
IS 9845 measures total migration. It does not identify which specific compounds migrated. For compound identification, additional analytical chemistry is needed. IS 9845 is a single-exposure test. It does not directly answer whether the same cup used daily for five years has the same migration profile as the cup at first use.
