Sharifeh Mohammadi is a labor organizer in Iran who was arrested in 2023 for "armed rebellion." The basis of this charge, if you can call it that, was her previous membership in the Committe to Help Form Worker's Organizations, which the state allegdges is linked to the Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan. The Committe denies this and says this accusation is a pretext for persecuting activists, something the Iranian Government is known to do. [1,2]. Regardless, Sharifeh has not been a member of the Committee since 2011, over a decade before her arrest [1]. Other evidence used against her is her possession of a "No to Executions" poster and files about supporting imprisoned women as well her authorship of an article instructing labor activists on how to deal with interrogations [4]. Obviously, this "evidence" shows only that she is critical of the Iranian government, not that she has committed any crimes. Iran has provided no specific accusation of wrongdoing on Sharifeh's part; only a poorly demonstrated, distant connection to an armed group. This is typical in Iran , which does not make case details like evidence and judicial reasoning public (sometimes it's even kept from the defense.)
In the months following her arrest she was denied access to her lawyer and to family visits, was kept in solitary confinement, and was likely tortured [2,3]. After a trial where she was sentenced to death and a re-trial that failed to address the core issues with her conviction, the state reduced her sentence to 30 years imprisonment. While it is obviously good news that she will not be killed, 30 years in jail as retribution for peaceful activism is still a monstrous violation of her human rights.
If you want to oppose her sentence, there are action items below. Lots of the ones I found were outdated, targeted toward her initial death sentence, but there are some that are still active.
Sign the online petition demanding her release. The language is still outdated, referring to her death sentence as active, but the organization who created it (Free Sharifeh Mohammadi) is still active.
