SO... this took forever..... Stress, new jobs, and adjusting to said jobs= no time for anything. But hopefully Iâll figure something out. Anyway, this was written in two sittings, over a period of a few weeks. If it feels janky, thatâs probably why. I hope you like it! ***************************
Oh good glob, how could he⊠had he really? Marshall Lee hung his head and sighed again, pounding his head on the hotel bar for the umpth time. Why. Was. He. Such. An. Idiot? His best friend was getting married and Marshall just had to be a selfish idiot and ruin everything?!
Sure he thought maybe they had something special in high school and had been sad when they âmutuallyâ agreed to split as a couple, but they continued to be friends. That didnât stop. Perhaps even better friends than before they dated, and not just because they knew so much about the other, more than a regular person would.  They always just meshed somehow.
So yeah, he hadnât really given too much thought about Bubbaâs most recent suitor other than âehâ, but he should have seen something coming. He may have chosen to ignore it, but his subconscious wasnât stupid. Bubba was head over heels for this guy. Who happened to be a jackass, but Bubbaâs perfect jackass, apparently. When he got the invite for the special day heâd totally flipped out and got raging drunk after burning the cursed thing with Fionnaâs secret stock pile of fireworks Cake dutifully chose to ignore sitting in the pantry. Two furious girls later and a bit of damage to their garageâŠ
Anyway, Fionna had kept her invite safely pinned to the fridge and it was easy to get the venue and time off of that. Slipping into a party is much easier than one would think, especially when you look like youâre part of the band.
All he had meant to do was crash it and, well⊠he didnât know, make Bubba feel awkward? Tell him how much of an ass his fiancĂ© was? He sighed, he just couldnât help it when Cake had asked if anyone objected to the marriage to speak up or hold their peace..
But did he have to spring out from behind the drapery and belt out ABBA of all things? Eyes closed, the scene unfolded again and he cringed. He almost jumped out of his skin when the chair next to him squeaked and was going to tell the person off to find their own spot to pity party in, but didnât. He didnât have it in him to ruin anyone elseâs day. Besides, they were just sitting quietly; maybe they wanted the earth to swallow them up too.
But the quiet was such that it only intensified his memory of the look of disbelief and fury on both the groomsâ faces after his little stunt. He was reliving the worst decision heâd made in his short life when the person next to him spoke and reminded him he wasnât alone at the bar. It brought him back to the present and immediately made him want to crawl into the bottle of alcohol the bartender brought him and drown from embarrassment.
âAs far as crashing a wedding goes,â he spoke softly, âI canât say Iâve ever heard of anything so spectacular⊠I guess that answers why I didnât get your attendance slip back.â
Marshall didnât say anything as the guest gave a slight chuckle, instead wishing if the booze wasnât going to take him out of his misery, the polished bar top might absorb him into the grain.
âI think,â the other continued when Marshall remained silent a few minutes longer, âin time, it could even become one of my favorite memories of you. And thatâs saying something, youâve done some pretty cool things Marshall Lee. âŠSome really skronked up too, but mostly good as far as Iâm concerned.â
He kept his face on the bar, but turned, resting on a cheek to look at his uninvited drinking guest head on. Bubba looked right back, and after a weak smile, took the bottle in front of Marshall and poured himself a drink of it.
He watched as the pink tinged man took a gulp before knocking back the drink and then coughed immediately after. His shoulders were rigid with stress, but they were always like that. His eyes were thoughtful once he recovered from his shock, and he was playing with the glass between his hands. He was still in his tux though, and as soon as Marshallâs eyes fell on the flower in the buttonhole of his breast pocket he had to look away.
âBubba,â he mumbled into the wood, âdonât sugarcoat it. I showed up to your perfect wedding with your perfect fiancĂ©, Ricardio,â the name still held bile as Marshall spit it out, âand then sang âTake a Chance On Meâ. You donât have to be nice to me, it was a dick move, and I can see that now. I should have never showed up.â He saw Bubba frown and closed his eyes again. Had Marshall not learned his lesson about being a jerk? Glob! The other sighed, and with any luck Marshall thought, would leave and just cut him out of his life completely. But instead, a hand was on his shoulder and Marshall stared up at itâs owner with confusion.
âBut you meant it, right? That if I changed my mind, youâd be around?â
âBubba.â Marshall Lee finally said sitting upright, âI lugged myself and my bass halfway across the world with no other plan than to say donât marry that prick with no plan for the aftermath. Yeah man, I did. All of it.â He seemed to stew on that for a bit before nodding.
        âOk.â
        âOk?â
âIf⊠If itâs still there, I want to. Take a chance.â Marshall usually never had a loss for words, but this rendered him speechless. Bubba, his soulmate since high school, currently in a tux having supposed to just marry someone other than Marshall, was saying he wanted to take a chance on him? His mind short circuited and he stared.
âIâd like that Bubba, but I think your husband might have some qualms.â The other looked down and swallowed hard before answering.
âDoubtful. Especially when his fiancĂ© told him he was right when accused of still being in love with his ex.â Bubba shrugged and Marshall blinked long and slow.
        â⊠in love with your ex.â
âSo it seems,â he poured himself a second glass and choked it down before filling it again. Marshall took the third glass out of his hands and set it off to the side.
âSo, to clarify⊠the weddingâs, off?â Bubba shook his head with fondness and smirked.
        âYes Marshall, the weddingâs off.â
