We’ve had a few months off but we’re back with details of the next event. IP Expo are in Manchester on the 20th–21st May, and we’ve been invited to run a meetup as part of the event as part of their networking events. You’ll need to register free as an IP Expo delegate to attend* as the event will be inside the conference, but you don’t need to have attended during the day. Please also RSVP to the meetup group so we can stay in touch.

Our second talk will be Gareth Rushgrove of Puppet Labs and Devops Weekly.

Gareth is going to talk about “The End of the General Purpose Operating System (and what that means for configuration management)”:

The state of the art for infrastructure is advancing quickly; with Docker, containers, new operating systems and cluster-native tools like Kubernetes or Mesos coming out of the woodwork. What does this mean for how we will manage systems in the future?

I spent some time at IPEXPO on Wednesday, following the security talks. Some great presentations and examples of how people mess up.

People don't really care about security (or 'Social Engineering') @BrianHonan and a few other speakers commented that especially in these times of austerity, the easy way to compromise a network may well be to take the network admin out for dinner, buy her a few drinks and offer £5k towards current mortgage problems. Or just use a spanner. Either approach is a lot easier than the a full on technical attack, and social engineering is the way most big attacks happen.

The RSA hack - in this huge breach hackers targeted some individuals with an email title '2011 Recruitment plan.xls'. Who wouldn't want to read that email!

A few months back I attended and spoke at the IPExpo 2011 at Earl’s Court Two in London.  I gave 3 presentations which were recorded and two of them are available online from the IPExpo website.  I haven’t figured out a way to download or embed the videos but did want to send the video links.  The slides for each are also available.  Sign-up (free) may be required to view the content but it’s pretty good, if I do say so myself.

A Cloud To Call Your Own – I was late for this one due to some time confusion but I run in get mic’d and pull it all together.  I run thru various areas of focus/concern/challenges of deploying applications in the cloud – many of them no different than a typical application in a typical data center.  The Encryption Dance gets it’s first international performance and the UK crowd wasn’t quite sure what to do.  It is the home of Monty Python, isn’t it?

Catching up to the Cloud: Roadmap to the Dynamic Services Model – This was fun since it was later in the afternoon and there were only a few folks in the audience.  I talk about the need to enable enterprises to add, remove, grow and shrink services on-demand, regardless of location.
