Did you catch the wonderful Iowa pride video that Iowa Culture put out last week? It's great! They want to know, what is brag-worthy in your community? #NotToBrag, but at the OSA, we are incredibly proud of Iowa's landmark protective burial law, passed 40 years ago in 1976. This law was the FIRST of its kind in the United States! It provides legal protection for all burials, regardless of age and whether on public or private land; reburial of ancient remains (more than 150 years in age); and statutory oversight by the OSA working with an Indian Advisory Council. This landmark legislation was the result of the hard work, tenacity, and dedication of Indian activists including Maria Pearson (Yankton Dakota) and Don Wanatee (Meskwaki) - a member of the Indian Advisory Council for the past 40 years! Here, Maria (right) and Don (left) are pictured with then-Governor Robert D. Ray and Priscilla Lasley Wanatee. (Photo courtesy of Ronald Thompson)
We’re chill.
We have our sights set on achieving a gold-level designation by next year.
