Sunburst Knight
Golden thorns claw at the night The darkness turns to embers Dancing on horizon lines— The dawn-light’s early splendour. Son of universal plight His body thick with fervour Dashes with such torrid flight And yet, he hungers further! Never to be dulled by strain His lantern burns eternal Eager to defeat his bane: The knight of all nocturnal.
So, here we have the companion piece to my earlier illustration, Vesper Knight. The sun, who chases the moon across the sky, and is eager to defeat the darkness with powerful sun rays.
I don’t know, I love this mythology. It’s a very fundamental one, as the triumph of the sun over the dark, mysterious night plays into our most animalistic fears about the unknown and its dangers, or at least it’s perceived dangers anyway.
I’m not as happy with this one as I am with Vesper Knight. I know I should view each one as an individual but as a two-piece set I’d like to have had an equal level of satisfaction with both of them. Oh well. I’ve had trouble enjoying much of my recent work, so it’s been fulfilling to do something I’m actually really into over the last couple of weeks.
