Millennials are really in a sweet spot when it comes to technology. When they were children, there was hardly any internet technology. They started to learn about technology in Middle and High School. So currently, they're the only generation who literally grew up with no technology and grew up with technology. Let's not forget, Millennials were at their sweet spots when AOL came to the home also.
The 2012 election left Romney supporters disappointed and furious. Battered by defeat, they did what true Americans do under such grave circumstances: They took to twitter. What followed was a salvo of troubling (read: SUPER racist and not okay) tweets launched into the ether like so many⌠I donât know⌠Going to go with âangry jerk missiles". Anyway, Jezebel highlights some of the worst ones here (NSFW).
Oh, but the story doesnât end there! This is the 21st century and everything must be counted, sorted, poked, prodded and probed until we are certain that we never cared about it in the first place. If there is a God, he/she definitely has OCD.*Â
Somebody created a tumblr that highlights racist, and anti-obama twitter users. Itâs called âHello there, Racistsâ (google it on your own time) and it lit up my newsfeed this weekend. Everyone had a good laugh before going back to their pictures of cats doing things that they arenât suppose to do.
Iâm not sure how to feel about it. The site exists in the capacity to shame racists for being horrible and ignorant. At first glance, it feels like frontier justice served up piping hot. Disliking racists is safe. Itâs easy. It's like watching Indiana Jones punch Nazis. Nazis have it coming. Upon further inspection however, âHello there, Racistsâ inadvertently raises some interesting issues about twitter and social media as whole.
About half of the twitter accounts featured in âHello there, Racistsâ belong to minors. This begs the question: Should twitter have an age restriction? Currently it doesn't As it stands, these kids who, by law, are not fully responsible for their actions are endangering their futures by publicly announcing to the world that they are both hateful and ignorant.
After reading many of the tweets put up on âHello there, Racistsâ, it becomes clear that these kids are using twitter to communicate with their peers a la facebook. Twitter is not facebook. Twitter is vast and terrifying. Anything you tweet is instantly removed from its intended context and is put on the operating table for dissection by the entire god damned universe. There is no âwhat I meant wasâŚâ in twitter. Twitter has taken down celebrities and politicians alike. In most cases itâs self inflicted.** Tweets are archived in the library of congress. These kids have isbn codes attached to their juvenile gaffes.
Videogames and movies, on the other hand, do have age restrictions. Whether this is more for the purposes of protecting kids or avoiding lawsuits is another discussion entirely.
Donât get me wrong. Bigots are stupid, smelly jerks. Simply put, they are why we canât have nice thing. For example, while the United States was fighting a civil war over âStates Rights to own slavesâ, London was busy making a subway system. The London Underground opened in 1863. Read that again. What I am trying to say is that we should have hoverboards by now but we donât. Thanks a lot, Jefferson Davis!Â
At this point you are asking yourself: Why donât these kids just make their twitter accounts private? Well, Mom, I will tell you. I think itâs the same reason why many people from my generation didn't make their livejournals private. Giving everyone access to your thoughts appeals to the ego. The only difference is that livejournals were kept in a dusty corner of the internet's attic. You had to go looking for them. Also, there are spiders in the attic. Twitterâs hashtag system has changed all of that.
