NGC 2419: Wayward Globular or the Milky Way’s Own?

Turns out, we may not know our extragalactic neighbors as well as we thought.

One of the promises held forth with the purchase of our first GoTo telescope way back in the late 1990s was the ability to quickly and easily hunt down ever fainter deep sky fuzzies. No more juggling star charts and red headlamps, no more…

1 What does their bedroom look like?

Kind of a mess but a cozy mess, and quite spacious. There’s some laundry scattered around and his bed’s only half made. There’s plenty of room to walk without tripping. To be honest, he’s sure a lot of the clothes aren’t even his. He definitely doesn’t own this bra. Damien has a large king sized bed with a posturepedic mattress, a firm box spring, and a sturdy frame. It has a small alcove over the headboard so he can keep things like his phone or other items easily within reach. There’s a bedside table on either end with its own lamp, a big window in the far corner that usually has the blinds drawn, and several sliding door closeted partitions, one of which opens to an entertainment center. He also has his own full bathroom. The walls are an unimposing red color but otherwise surprisingly bare.

2 Do they have any daily rituals?

Does checking his phone every night count? How about drinking? Generally he lives moment to moment so no not really.

3 Do they exercise, and if so, what do they do? How often?

He had a more rigorous workout routine before he started doing side work as a farmhand at Hartline. With him doing heavy lifting and other manual labor 5 days a week, most of Damien’s personal exercise is geared towards cardio these days. He runs and sometimes hits the gym to keep himself a bit sculpted. Working out’s more fun with buddies, though.

5 Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.)

Absolutely a controlled chaos sort – emphasis on the chaos. Ask someone to find something in any of Damien’s spaces and they’d be utterly lost but he would easily come up and find it (though it may take shifting one or two things at most). His messes aren’t dirty usually, just cluttered, but to be honest he isn’t the best at dusting and there’s probably a whole bunch of shit under his bed he forgot about.

6 Eating habits and sample daily menu

Damien generally tries to keep healthy and pays attention to nutrition in the general sense of keeping a balanced diet. He enjoys salty snack foods but is conscientious of their effects so if he indulges he’s always sure to have something healthy too and maybe a bit of exercise to work it off if he feels it’s necessary. Common meals include maple sausage links for breakfast, a sub for lunch, and he often dines out for dinner. Damien keeps hydrated with plenty of water, orange juice, and a lot of beer or liquor. Wine’s fun too.

7 Favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time

Wasting time is kind of relative to Damien. With his current lifestyle, he figures most of the things he does are technically a waste of time and most people can argue just about anything is. That doesn’t make wasting time bad, though, if the activities in doing so are enjoyable. Playing cards is easily his favorite way to waste time but, you know, just having a friendly pointless chat can be amazing.

8 Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging

Damien is very big on self indulgence. He has a lot of hedonistic habits and sees absolutely nothing wrong with them. His favorite, most obviously, is sex or sensual behaviors.Drinking, alternatively. PARTIES.

15 Biggest and smallest short term goal?

Biggest short term goal is sleeping soundly with a friend. Smallest short term goal is getting his boss Maree to go clubbing with him or sOMETHING.

16 Biggest and smallest long term goal?

Biggest long term goal is probably not hurting or endangering any of his friends. Smallest long term goal is Not Dying.

19 What do they think about before falling asleep at night?

Often he finds himself reminiscing as a form of comfort; something funny a friend said, spending time with someone he hasn’t seen in a while, sexual encounters he especially enjoyed (which often give way to fantasy and, well–). When not good things, his anxiety is a major contender and sometimes he needs to drink himself into a state of calm before he can actually fall asleep. Bad thoughts have ways of worming their way into even the most pleasant memories.

25 How do they see themselves 5 years from today?

Dead.

26 Do they have any plans for the future? Any contingency plans if things don’t workout?

No and no. He doesn’t honestly see much point in planning these days and certainly not planning contingencies for plans he hasn’t bothered making.

Instead, I’ll regale you with his past plans. See, when he was little he wanted to be a stage magician. Then when that was deemed too unrealistic, he wanted to be an actor. That didn’t work out so well either so the next best thing, he figured, would be getting on TV. How would he get on TV you ask? By becoming a news anchor. This idiot majored in and was going to get a bachelor’s in journalism just so he could make people look at him and listen to him talk. If things had actually panned out the way he expected them to then he would have finished, gotten his degree, and realized that journalism is too much work for what he had in mind. Instead, he would have moved on to bar tending classes and begun doing street magic on the side. This actually would have been so fucking ideal for him, he would have been so happy and finally settled.

But life’s not fair, is it?

27 What is their biggest regret?

Going to that fucking bar that particular fucking night.

28 Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy?

Mordekai is absolutely Damien’s best friend. He’s had best friends come and go in the past but since settling into his current lifestyle he has tried to keep everyone at an amiable distance. Due to past intimacy and their connection with Annie Clarke, Damien feels drawn to Mordekai; he finds the man’s presence both soothing and exciting. He’s also been getting along very nicely with Officer Drey Byrne and Mister Phoenix Argryis.

In the past, Damien certainly made it his business to pick on others and cause a ruckus but now he only does so as good naturely as he can manage. He holds to the belief that life is way too fucking short to hold grudges. Even so, there are people he feels the world would be better without and currently that position is held by someone who is no longer living. In light of that, a suitable replacement would be almost anyone in the dark elf mafia.

34. Thoughts on privacy? (Are they a private person, or are they prone to ‘TMI’?)

Damien skirts a fine line. When it comes to certain things in life, he is exceedingly private; he lies frequently to keep certain facts hidden. On the other hand, he comes off naturally and intentionally as if he has nothing to hide at all. He often over shares, goes into too much detail, and usually expects everyone else to do the same. When they don’t, he can be prone to prying but will back off if asked. To put it another way, nothing is TMI for him to hear but some things are TMI for him to tell.

36 What makes them feel guilty?

Crying is a sure-fire way to make him feel awful. If he’s made someone cry, anyone, he will immediately double back. Truthfully, upsetting others in general has begun taking quite a toll on him where it never used to in his early years. Worse, all this fibbing and hiding has cut him to the core more than once and it’s easy for him to see it happening again.

48 How do they express love?

Physically, for the most part. Handshakes, hugs, gentle ribbing, ruffling hair, a friendly smack on the ass. It doesn’t have to be sexual in any way but Damien enjoys people as a whole and the people he enjoys most he also enjoys being close to – close enough to touch and feel warmth. He’s very affectionate.

49 If this person were to get into a fist fight, what is their fighting style like?

Oh my god. He has before but Damien fights dirty. He probably doesn’t need to because he’s pretty tall and, these days, strong, but he relies on tricky tactics, distractions, and seeking out weakness. He is not at all above hitting below the belt (though he does feel sympathy in the wake of it). Mostly, though, Damien’s greatest offense is his defense and he would prefer to only fight as harshly as necessary to find a chance for escape.
