N. Lee Wood. "Looking for the Mahdi" (1996) Female journalist of middle-eastern descent disguises herself as a man and takes a fabricated human along on her reluctant mission to a fictitious middle-eastern country. Culturally sensitive and politically perceptive with a disturbingly prescient view of the world today. Favorite bit of world-building: the "fabricant" is hooked on trashy romance novels because he's fascinated with human emotion. Recommended.
Here's a headcanon-ish thing: imagine Samuels in the Fallout universe as a Gen 3 synth. Where would the player find him?Would he have escaped and be living in hiding? Helping the Railroad? Or would he still be toiling away inside the Institute?
Iâve been thinking about this off and on all day when I should have been studying. I have not gone that in depth with the main quest, so Iâm going to give a couple different scenarios I feel would happen under certain circumstances (because Iâm not sure which circumstances are actually canon). Placing everything under the cut for length and possible spoiler-ish things.
So first off, Samuels has a behavior inhibitor in the Alien-verse, but the Gen 3 synths in Fallout do not. For the sake of making things easier, letâs assume that those personality traits brought about by the inhibitor (i.e. his selflessness, passive nature, etc.) are part of his personality in the Fallout-verse. Also, I have not actually been to the Institute in game, but I have encountered synths that were unaware that they were synths. I also know that many synths have fled the Institute. So I am not sure if the Gen 3 synths that stay with the Institute fully aware of everything.
Scenario 1: He is not fully aware of the Instituteâs actions. If Samuels was unaware of the Instituteâs actions, I could imagine the player finding him within the Institute headquarters. I see Samuels as being sort of a workaholic, very dedicated to his job and very task focused. I think he would be in a lab setting (the Institute has labs, right?) trying to resolve a very complex and delicate issue that isnât directly tied to the awful things the Institute does (hence the tunnel vision) so he would be very passionate and enthusiastic about his work at the Institute. Definitely toiling away.
Scenario 2: He is fully aware of the Instituteâs actions. Regardless of the Instituteâs overall goal (I donât know what it is yet), Samuels would not approve of the methods being used to accomplish it. I believe that Samuels would take the first opportunity available to flee the Institute. Because of his protective and helpful nature, he would join the Railroad in order to help other synths escape and to help put a stop to the Institute (hoping to make a difference and perhaps harboring a little guilt because of what he is). I imagine that due to his passive nature, he would only use force/violence when absolutely necessary (but he could totally kick ass when provoked i.e. the Working Joe in AI). This would make him steer away from doing much field work, so I think the player would find him either in the Railroad headquarters or another major outpost in some sort of non-combative support position.
Alright I think thatâs it *laughs nervously* Iâm not sure if that was actually what you had in mind and I apologize for rambling. Feel free to add to this, disagree, and/or correct me on anything I said. I would actually like to hear other opinions on this, I have trouble thinking about characters in AU settings (probably the reason why none of my billion WIP fics are AU). :)

Yaaaayyy!! Under the cut because theyâre kind of long
18-things you said when you were scared
The humans love Undyne. Because of course they would, sheâs got a vibrant personality, and looks like a hotter version of a horror movie creature with a shock of gorgeous red hair. Alphys, not so much.
Not that sheâd know. Itâs more of a hypothesis, really; she hasnât worked up the courage to talk to any besides Frisk. Of course, she freezes on the spot when Undyne asks her to come meet a few that sheâs getting to know.
âWhatâs wrong?â she asks, hands on her hips. âTheyâre cool, trust me. Oneâs got really cool hair, itâs bright frigginâ pink! Oh, and thereâs anotherââ
âNo, no, no!â Alphys yelps suddenly. Undyne frowns.
âSheesh, whatâs your deal? You havenât even met them yet, why do you act like you hate them?â
âI donâtâŠI donât hate them,â the scientist replies softly, wringing her clawed hands together. âBut theyâŠth-they hate me!â
Undyne glares at her in confusion.
âWhat the hell, they havenât even met you, Alphys,â she snaps. âAnd Iâve only ever told them good things about you; what, you think Iâd tell them anything but? Do you not trust me?â
âNo! Not a-at all! I justâŠâ Alphys reluctantly meets Undyneâs hurt gaze before glancing back down at the floor. âWhat if they hate me? Theyâre h-humans after all, and n-not like FriskâŠand humans, well, they were the-the ones whoâŠy-you knowâŠâ
âAlphysâŠare you scared of them?â
âN-No-well. IâŠyesâŠâ
Undyne leans down and takes Alphysâs hands in hers.
âYou gotta trust me here, Alphys,â she  says. âIâm not saying youâve got no reason to be scared. Donât tell anyone I said this, but I was pretty damn scared when we first got back to the surface too. But these guysâthese humansâtheyâre great! I told them all about you and lemme tell ya, they are dying to meet you. They think itâs just the coolest thing that you built a whole robot yourself.â
âIâŠâ Alphys blushes and tightens her hold on Undyneâs hands. âAlright, y-yes! Iâll come with you!â She pauses and quirks and eyebrow at the fish-woman. âYouâŠtold them about Mettaton? Heâs not even my most impressive creationâŠtechnology and program-wise, I mean.â
âDonât let him hear you say that,â Undyne snorts, nuzzling her. âBut really, I donât blame them for wanting to know you either way; youâre pretty darn awesome. Now come on, theyâre waiting down the street.â
Alphysâs blush deepens as she lets Undyne lead her out of the lab.
12-things you said while you thought I was asleep
Dave knows that Hal doesnât need to sleep, but he appreciates how quietly Hal works while he tries to sleep, and he especially appreciates the rare occasions when Hal lies down next to him; itâs comforting, even when Hal isnât quite sure where to put his hands.
Normally heâs half-awake as Hal does research silently at the desk to the side of the room, lulled to sleep by the scratch of his pencil and the faint noise of the city outside. Tonight, however, he hears Hal sit on the edge of the bed and softly murmur his name. He opens one eye in the darkness, but doesnât shift.
âI apologize, Dave,â he says. âYouâre probably asleep. And I probably sound rather silly, talking to you while youâre asleep, but IâŠâ
He clears his throat, and Dave wonders if androids really need to clear their throats or if Hal picked it up from Dr. Chandra.
âI wanted to thank you, somehow. For making my life what it is. Itâs sort ofâŠdifficult to articulate face-to-face. You have been quite patient and so very kind to me. I canât quite place it, but I feelâŠat home with you. As I never truly have.â
Hal reclines on the bed, staring at the ceiling. Dave wants to turn and tell him there is no need to thank him, but Hal hums softly and starts speaking again.
âI often think about Frank and Indra,â he says, adjusting the pillow. âAnd I wonderâŠif you would rather have something like what they have. With a human, I mean. I wouldnât be offended if you did.
âI only hope you feel as strongly about me as I do about you. Because I do feel rather, erm, passionately I think would be the right word. About you, that is.â
Dave can feel the heat rise to his cheeks as Hal rambles, and smiles to himself.
âDave,â Hal says solemnly, as though he has happened upon a great discovery. âI love you, Dave.â
Dave finally rolls over, and puts his arm around Halâs waist, burying his face in the androidâs chest. The heart-like processor in his chest whirrs frantically.
âWere you listening to everything I just said?â Hal asks softly, a twinge of embarrassment in his tone.
Dave presses his face harder against Halâs torso, opting to answer with an âI love you too, Hal.â
When you get this, reply with 5 things that make you happy and send it to the last 10 people to have notes in your activity.
1. My brother (heâs a little shit sometimes but I love him)
2. My (future) profession (I love making and modifying devices, then seeing them provide relief/assistance for someone)
3. Seeing other people smile (I canât help but smile too)
4. My online and real-life friends (You guys make everything better, there is never a dull moment and itâs really nice to be enthusiastic about stuff with other people)
5. Boogie boarding (I know itâs kinda childish but I love it)
