This was a social media series where I would post any roadkill I would see as a cover photo on social media for a few years. The goal was to consider the speed of visual information. What images do we celebrate looking at slowly, and what visual information are we practiced in overlooking? The series challenged viewers to reconsider the power of slow visual consideration of our overlooked mistakes.
USAID seeks inputs in their nutrition strategy development process
USAID is in the process of developing a comprehensive Nutrition Strategy, in recognition of the essential role that nutrition plays in individuals’ and countries’ development. USAID’s Nutrition Strategy is to inform the Agency’s policies and programs for nutrition in both emergency and development contexts with the goal of improving nutrition to save lives, build resilience, increase economic productivity, and advance development. This strategy is expected to be ready somewhere in April 2014 and will also be a very important stepping stone towards the development of a broader US Government nutrition strategy which is now in process as well.
The U.S. Government is committed to working towards the World Health Assembly's 2025 targets for improved maternal, infant, and young child nutrition, as well as the overarching goals in the Global Nutrition for Growth Compact.
A technical working group, comprised of individuals across USAID, has developed a draft strategy and sought public comments via different avenues among others by a public event at Interaction in Washington D.C. on January 9, 2014 at 2pm. CWS was also present.
It became clear during the consultation that Documenting and learning from nutrition programming experiences is essential to ensuring that agriculture investments contribute to positive nutrition outcomes.
Funding accounts that are utilized for nutrition programming include Development Assistance (DA), Economic Support Funds (ESF), and Global Health Programs (GHP), Global Food Security Initiative (GFSI), Food for Peace Title II (Title II), International Disaster Assistance (IDA), Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). They are reported across various sectors: health (GFSI/NUT, GHP/MCH, GHP/FPRH, and PEPFAR); agriculture (DA, ESF, and Title II); water supply and sanitation (DA, ESF, and MENA); household-level water, sanitation, hygiene, and environment (DA, ESF and GHP); and humanitarian assistance (IDA).
It seems not unlikely that as soon as the broader US Government nutrition strategy has been finalized, it will be expected that the importance of the role of nutrition will be further amplified beyond the above mentioned programs and sectors.
