for about 22 years, avi had not known who her dad was, nor had she cared. well, maybe a little when she was younger. but anytime she’d ask her mom, she would get answers like ‘oh he lives on the moon’ or ‘he’s a secret agent on an undercover mission’ or ‘he’s in a band traveling the world’. who would’ve thought that her mom was actually telling her the truth this whole time, at least with the third excuse. avi had always assumed that even if the opportunity to meet her dad would arise, she wouldn’t care. not out of resentment or anything. she just didn’t need another parental figure. she had her mom, her aunts, her grandmother... her family was big enough already, she never felt like there was an empty spot for her dad. yet here she was, letter in hand, standing in front of a stranger’s door. she’d known there was something weird when they’d come across some random man at the grocery store and he’d look at her mom with a weird expression, her mom mirroring that expression, and then he’d look at avi with kind of a horrified expression. then again, she was a trans girl in a small town and she’d been wearing a shirt that said “this is a gays only event”, so avi had assumed his reaction was related to that. until her mom sat her down at the kitchen table to show her the letter she was holding right now. a letter from her dad to her mom, and also kind of to avi. at least in the sense that he’d left her some information about her siblings. siblings.. she’d always had her many cousins and she’d thought that since they grew up together, they were like siblings to her. a bunch of ginger and blonde kids that kinda looked like her and she sort of got along with most of the time. but actual siblings, now that she new she had them, she knew that that was different than sort-of-siblings. of course she could not suppress the curiosity about them. and their addresses were right there... how could she not ring the doorbell. which is what she now did, slipping the letter into the back pocket of her jeans and waiting till someone opened the door.

Just in my room. And with Thanksgiving I was back home.
