Enid Noor Mohanty has never been known by any other name.  She and her twin sister were given up young, abandoned at a police station at two years old, with nothing but their first names: Enid and Nadia. The police didn’t know anything else about them, so when they were placed in foster care, the sisters took on their foster family’s name.  And then, it simply stuck.  They have never been without each other. Enid is grateful for that. Nadia and Enid have always been close, orbiting around each other as twins often do. Even if they couldn’t be more different. Nadia bold and no-nonsense, knowing exactly what she wanted out of life, even if she wasn’t always sure the best path to get it. Meanwhile, Enid didn’t know anything about what she wanted out of life. Sometimes, she spent her days wondering why she was even here.  Was it to help ghosts? To keep her sister from being lonely? To witness the horrors and joys of the world and feel nothing at all?  Recently, something has awoken inside Enid. She doesn’t know what triggered it. All she knows is that she has been having strange dreams. She’s been sleepwalking. Her thoughts are distracted. There is an itch under her skin that she is doing her best to try and ignore. But, it is becoming more and more insistent. Five years in prison didn’t do much to change Gem Mohanty.

 He is still angry. Angry at his birth family, for kicking him out for an accident. Angry at himself, for being unable to contain his magic. Angry at the system, for treating him like a criminal, with no one able to help him. Pyrokinetics don’t have covens like sorcerers, no built-in family. There had been no one to show him how to control it. How was that his fault? It was like telling a kid it was their fault for failing a math test when they hadn’t had a single teacher. Not that he’ll ever tell you how angry he is or complain about how unfair the world is. 

He is still mean. If anything, he’s meaner. You would be too if the world wanted to make you out to be a villain. He doesn’t have time for kindness. Being kind has never gotten someone like him anywhere.

He is still scared. Scared of his birth family, his sister’s face: the symbol of that fear. Scared of himself, his magic is still out of control and after five years in England’s Magicks Penitentiary you can guarantee that he didn’t get any practice in. Scared of the system that put him in prison for an accident. A system that will do it again without blinking. It hadn’t been his fault. He hadn’t meant to hurt anyone. He hadn’t meant to burn part of the bloody school down. If you suggest he’s afraid, the burns you get won’t be an accident.

He is still hurt. Wouldn’t you be too? The hurt is worse than the anger and the fear. Gem buries it beneath a bad attitude and a tough leather jacket, but it is easy to see if you close enough. Though, don’t get too close. Or you will get burned.

You’ve engaged with us, with police, housing and healthcare, and have shown us all how much you love little Frankie. I’m well aware of how much you’re doing to turn your life around, for yourself and for your son, but at this time I’m afraid that your lifestyle is still too chaotic to care for a child with needs as complex as Francis’s alone.

P. Lowe, Nurse Practitioner (2): Whilst we haven’t seen much of each other, I have noted on the occasions where Lorna has brought Francis into the practice that she is appropriate with him, cares for him, and expresses love and affection for him. I do however have to agree with the concerns raised by the other professionals here in regards to Lorna’s ability to care for her son, whose Magick status and additional needs mean that he would need significant support before he would be entirely safe in her care.

PC McDowell, Northumbria Police (0): It is the belief of myself and the police force as a whole that due to Ms. Robson’s frequent involvement with known criminals and her extensive history of drug and alcohol offences, among other petty crimes, it is not safe for this child to remain in her care, and we would advocate for immediate removal.

O. Karceswki, School Teacher (1): Francis’s needs are extensive. His magic is complex, and his mental health concerning for such a young age. I would unfortunately support removal at this time, even if temporarily, to help both Francis and Lorna get the support they need.

L. Robson (7): I love my son. I know I haven’t had the best start in life and I haven’t given him the best start but I love him. The best place for a boy to be, especially a boy like Frank, is with his mammy. I think with the right support I can look after him.

Delilah Mohanty has always been on top.

The eldest, her parents’ first born. Queen Bee in her year at Swynlake Secondary, top of her class five years running in Pride U’s medical programme, head of the Pride U cheerleading team for three years in a row. Delilah was always the person to turn to for advice, or if you wanted to know what was in and what was out… provided she would talk to you, of course.

With her illustrious academic career behind her and glowing recommendations from her lecturers and her supervisors, it was no surprise that she got accepted onto one of the most competitive residencies at Swynlake General. She met a good man, settled down, and started an unexpected family.

And now all of it is crumbling around her.

There’s no one to blame but herself, really. She was the one who had put all that pressure on herself. To be popular, to be the smartest, to be the best. She was the one who had told herself she needed to settle down, buy the nice house in the suburbs, have the career.

Now Delilah has to save face. Hold onto as many pieces as she can and hope she can pick the rest up later. Delilah has always been on top, and it won’t be long until she’s back there again.

Competition was the name of the game for Riley Anderson.

Expectations rested upon their shoulders from the moment they were born under the stars of Arcadia. Their elven parents had waited for so long to start a family, their focus on much loftier things than settling down that they almost seemed to have forgotten. They had seen that their child was destined for a rather unique life, though the details they had found to be foggy even among the stars. They dreamed of bringing the new member of their court up in their profession as divinatory practitioners; this child would be useful to not only the Celestial Court but also the Seelie as a whole.

As the stars predicted, the child’s upbringing would be unique for elves as a whole.

One day a member of the Unseelie snuck into the High Court as all of the childrens’ tales warned, snatching the new babe from their cradle and replacing them with a human one. The child was whisked off to the human realm, the Unseelie member placing them with a family in the small town of Spring Park, Minnesota. They placed a forced Glamour on the child in hopes to keep them from the Seelie and left where the babe was thought to be the sleeping Riley Anderson.

When Riley was two they were taught to skate and hit a puck around on the ice, their father determined to have a mini hockey player emerging. It was one of the only times their parents were truly attentive. Love they doled out in droves but attention was harder to garner. It required skill and success and Riley learned to thrive in the thrill of victory. Their desire to improve and impress growing alongside themselves. Every game that they won (hockey, soccer, Monopoly, hide-and-seek, it didn’t matter) was a rush and left a desire to do more, to be better.

Things were great in Riley’s life. They had a best friend in Meg Merkling next door who they grew alongside. It was one of the only relationships where Riley wasn’t in a constant state of wanting to one-up their companion (only sometimes when it came to silly things like checkers). They talked about boys and girls and clothes and everything in between. The only secrets between the two were the ones Riley didn’t know.

See, Riley had always had odd dreams. Dreams about appearing in random places. At the lake, in the school, at the grocery store… All things that seemed like she was walking as a ghost in these spaces. It was ridiculous and Meg would always laugh at how Riley’s dreams were simultaneously cool (teleportation), but also so boring (nothing ever seemed to really happen in them). Riley also had strange feelings about what was going to happen, a sort of deja vu that they couldn’t explain. Once again, Meg thought Riley was just a little weird.

Getting to high school, Riley became captain of the hockey team and dominated the ice. They were on top of the world! A world that would, shortly, come crashing down around them.

Riley’s parents, who had been working remotely from DevTech, had gotten a promotion. “Working hard has its rewards, Riley,” they insisted with excitement. “Never settle!” The downside to this joyous event was, however, that the Anderson family was packing up their things and moving to Swynlake, England! The Magick Town where the CEO was living!

The teenager had thrown one of the biggest tantrums their parents had seen, hoping to change their minds but the deal had already been made and everything that Riley had ever known was either packed away in brown boxes and shipped to their new address or was something they had to say goodbye to.

No more lake down the road where Riley had first learned to skate, no more diner where Riley had gotten their first job, no more Meg only fifteen feet away from Riley’s bedroom window. No more Spring Park, Minnesota.

Now that they’re in Swynlake they don’t know anyone or anything. How are they supposed to survive through all of this change?
