i do. if you call him out on it he gets really defensive. i believe it totally, its hearbreaking

So I went back and rewatched what happens if you take the harsh option in the ending conversation and he says, very emotionally,

"I should’ve fucking known. Thats why I dont tell anyone this. You know what? It's all a lie. Good talk."

Hmm yeahhh that kindof does make it sound like he actually was telling the truth & now he's just trying to take it all back as a defense mechanism. But I still cant shake the feeling that this isn't really the whole story

All other dialogue options- neutrality, questioning, and acceptance bring about a similar reaction of "You might not believe me but you really are my only friend so thanks for hearing me out". The only dialogue option that brings out such strong emotion in him is if you do believe him & judge him for it, and tell him exactly what he doesn't want to hear, that he's right; he doesn't belong in the Railroad.

I do believe the core of what he's telling you, that he did something really bad that makes him feel he doesn't deserve your friendship, or to be a part of the Railroad; he has something really dark in his past that he's trying to make up for. I think he's telling a version of the truth that still isn't the truth, because like he says, he can't not lie. He's using this story because at this point your friendship is important to him and he still can't reveal what actually happened but he needs to know how you'll react to this information. 

Such an emotional reaction for when you judge him makes me feel that this was more of his way of trying to make peace with your relationship by using a cover story that gauges your reaction to "What if Deacon is actually a bad person?" It's him seeking acceptance from you because he really does value your friendship, and he needs to know that you'll still stand by him even knowing that he did something really bad in the past.
