In 2003, a video on YouTube captivated the whole world and introduced the melodious tunes of the ukulele. The video was a medley of ‘Over the Rainbow’ and ‘What a Wonderful World’ by the Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. Such was the power of the medley that it would soon be used in many movies, television shows and commercials. What the video also did was to recruit a world-wide fan base for this title known miniature guitar. So all the way from Hawaii to here in Penang, the ukulele has nudged its way into the hearts of a sizeable chunk of Penangites. It is not a stretch to see why Penangites have taken to the ukulele. The instrument’s breezy melody perfectly encapsulates everything Penang is – a laid-back island that is rich in heritage and has a lot of soul. Over the past few years as the community of ukulele musicians and lovers grew, members of the community came together to form the Penang Ukulele Movement which is based in Sungai Bakap. The group, which was formed to attract more players and to share techniques amongst the members, is steadily growing This four-stringed instrument which gets its name from the Hawaiian ‘jumping flea’ is also so popular here that Malaysia’s largest ukulele store is based in Penang. Local music teacher TC Chew says that it only takes a person without any prior musical training 2 to 3 months to pick up the ukulele. There are various free workshops organized periodically for the public. The popularity of the ukulele in Penang also means that the door has opened for renowned international musicians specializing in ukulele to hold concerts here. Come March, the Hawaiian ukulele master, Kimo Hussey will be in town for a solo concert.
