Or Mishka, or Inkeri, or Nael, or whatever name you gave out most recently, you've kinda stopped keeping track.
You're sitting at a table of the Drowsy Dragon with Kya and Delphi. Normally you'd prefer to stay by the counter and talk to Cosmo, but you've all just arrived from a pretty demanding quest, and the lower chairs around the table are much more comfortable to rest. Cain and Aegeus have taken over the kitchen and are whipping up something for all of you to eat, and Quasar just took your drink orders to Cosmo.
You may or may not be watching him as he walks up to the counter. Dragons, but do his shoulders look broad in that armor. You bet he could lift you up like it was nothing - one -handed, even.
“If you stare any harder, he's going to notice.” Delphi’s voice cuts through your, ahem, daydreaming.
You turn to glare at her. “Haha. Very funny. I wasn't staring.”
“You absolutely were staring.” Kya pipes up from the other side of you. “You always do, it's a miracle he hasn't noticed yet.”
“Lies and slander. I don't stare at him, I've never stared at anyone in my entire life.”
“Except for all the times you do stare. At him, specifically. When he isn't looking.” Kya rolls her eyes. “You're not subtle, y’know. We've all seen it.”
“I think he's genuinely the only person who hasn't noticed.” Delphi comments. “The baker asked after you two the other day, and he specifically said ‘that nice Paladin boy with the sweet tooth and his Fae partner’. I had to explain to him that you're not dating.”
“Yet!” Kya winks at you.
“Nor will we ever, are you insane?” You stare at Kya, trying for your most incredulous expression. “Me? And Croissaint over there?” you wave in his general direction, sparing a second to check that he is focused on Cosmo as they work. “Where on Gaia did you get that idea?”
“It's prolly something to do with how you keep looking at him with sad puppy eyes every time his back is turned.” Kya makes a valiant effort to enter your shitlist with that one.
“There are no puppy eyes!” You lie. “I am not attracted to Quasar, I don't like him that way.”
“What, so you don't think he's handsome?” Delphi’s eyebrow makes a solid attempt at escaping to her hairline.
“I didn't say that.” You rush to correct yourself. “I do have eyes, y'know. He's pretty, obviously. Chiseled jaw, great hair, pretty eyes, nice body, all that. But thinking he looks hot isn't the same as, I don't know, daydreaming about holding his hand or whatever.”
“Uhuh.” Kya seems unimpressed. “That's why I had to hear you wax poetic about the way his eyes sparkle just last week.”
“Okay, I have never waxed poetic in my life-”
“Or why you're always leaning on him despite the fact you're allergic to touch.” Delphi adds.
“Oh great, you're ganging up on me now.”
“Or why you keep going on totally-not-dates to any place that sells sweets no matter where we go so you can treat him to cake.”
“Maybe I just like cake, did you think of that-?”
“Or why you keep trying to steal things where you know he can see you- no, don't deny it, we all know you can be stealthier than that.”
“Alright! Alright, I got your point.” You check again to make sure he hasn't come any closer. Luckily, he's still laughing at something Cosmo said, and by your count the tray is still missing a couple of drinks. You're safe. Still, you lower your voice when you turn back to the two busybodies. “So I may have a bit of a crush on him. It's no big deal.”
“Oh honey, you are well past the crush stage.” Kya tsks at you. “You are gone for that boy. Down bad. Heads over heels, doodling on your notes, madly in love.”
“What? That's ridiculous.”
“No, she's right.” Delphi hums. “If it was just a crush, you'd have done something about it already. Hit on him maybe, or tried to get him into bed. But you've done nothing except pine from afar, which at the very least means you really like him.”
“Why would I like him like that?” you cross your arms in front of your chest, defensive. “We have nothing in common.”
“You mean aside from the deep and sincere devotion to your deity of choice?” Delphi points out. “And there’s the whole symmetry thing, with Cassiopeia and Leviathan. And you spend an awful amount of time pouring over old scrolls together.”
“It's a worthy endeavor in the pursuit of knowledge!”
“And besides” Kya continues as if you hadn't said anything. “They do say opposites attract, and all. You complement each other well, I think. It's sweet!”
“You're delusional.” You tell them, turning to look at Quasar again.
Okay, fine, so you might have developed feelings (eugh) for the pompous, arrogant, bossy, kind-hearted, brilliant and devastatingly handsome paladin. It's not your fault he's pretty, alright? And strong. And exactly your type.
So what if you spend hours fantasizing about kissing him mid-rant to shut him up? If you can picture exactly what it would feel like to cuddle him in bed? If the rare occasions where he gives you a hug make your heart speed up and your palms sweat?
(So what if you've woken up sweaty and gross more than once from very interesting dreams involving his chest and your hands?)
So what?
“It's not like it'd ever happen, anyway.” You mumble into your scarf, suddenly feeling wistful.
You're still looking at him, so you don't notice the girls sharing a look over your head. They have an entire conversation with just facial expressions and gestures, but eventually, Delphi is the one to break the silence.
“What makes you say that?” she asks, trying for a neutral tone.
“He doesn't like me.” you say like it's a forgone conclusion. Because to you, it is.
They fall dead silent besides you. There's a beat or two where you just keep watching him and Cosmo before Kya speaks again.
“Rune, darling, he adores you.”
“No. I mean, we're friends, sure” you wave a hand “we hang out and all, just like all of us do. But that's all there is to it. He doesn't see me like that.”
“Oh, that is simply not true, a Stór.”
“He talks about you all the time when you're not there.” Delphi adds, sounding unsure but earnest. “We walked past a bookshop the other day and he was wondering if you'd like any of the books. He almost bought one, but said he wasn’t sure you didn’t have it already.”
“Look, guys, I appreciate the kindness, but please stop.” You sigh. “It's not going to happen. I've made my peace with it.” well, you haven’t, not really, but you sure are trying to.
They look like they want to say something else, but right as they do Quasar returns to the table, drink tray in hand.
“Okay, so it's a Crafted Love for Kya, a Gentle Tonic for Delphi, a Hot Chocolate for Cain, a Dour Sour for Aegeus, and a Slow Strike for Rune-” he sets the drinks down one by one in front of their respective seats, knowing they will stay the perfect temperature until Cain and Aegeus come back. Only as he's placing the last one, he looks at you, and the smile he had on gives way to a frown. “What's wrong? Are you alright, Rune?”
Curse his perceptiveness and ability to pick up on your mood. “I'm fine.” You reassure him, trying for a smile that falls a bit flat. “Just tired.”
The frown persists, and he sits across from you without even looking at his own drink. “Are you sure? I don't remember you getting hurt, but I'd be happy to heal you-”
“I'm really fine. I promise.” You reassure him, picking up your mug and holding it close to your chest.
He doesn't look like he's letting it go. “You should probably eat something and go rest, then. I'll go see if they need any help to finish up.” He leaves his own Voyager's dream at the table and heads to the kitchen, only pausing to touch your shoulder briefly as he goes.
You sigh, taking a sip of your own drink, mood soured with talk of your ill-fated romance. When you bother to shift your attention back to the girls, they are looking at each other, eyes wide in disbelief. They keep glancing at you like you've lost your mind. “What?” You ask.
“He just handed you your favorite drink, without asking. Saw that you didn't look happy, got worried, and went to make sure you'd have some food so you could rest up soon.” Delphi speaks very slowly, as if she's trying to explain complex magic theory to Andu. “And you're saying he doesn't like you like that.”
“He would literally do all of that for any of you.”
“Y’know, I'm not sure he would.” Kya takes a sip of her drink. “He cares, sure, but he'd just let us know the food should be done soon and then sit down to chat.”
“I'm telling you, you're seeing things that aren't there.”
Right in cue, Quasar comes back, holding a bowl of fragrant stew that he hands you without asking. “Try to eat something, okay? And then you can go take a nap. I can watch Andu for you if you want a break.”
“Dragons, Quasar, I'm fine.” you can't help but laugh at him. The sound of it seems to get him to relax a bit, shoulders dropping and a small smile on his face. “Relax. Where are the boys?”
“Aegeus is just finishing up with the food, they'll be here in a second. I asked if I could get you some early.” He sits back across from you, watching you carefully until you take a bite. When you hum in pleasure at the taste, he lets himself relax enough to take a sip of his drink. In an effort to avoid more questions on your well-being, you ask him about the wizard you'd fought the day before, and he answers excitedly, launching you both into a lengthy discussion on the merits of Primordial versus Divination magic.
Unbeknownst to you, the girls are trading glances with each other, both wondering how bling you can possibly be, and what exactly they’re going to do about it. If Quasar notices them, he doesn't mention it.
