This is a post-break up two CD compilation featuring a sort of best of on the first disc and a recording of one of their last gigs on the second. The Beta Band are not really a singles or best of kind of band however, so die-hard fans would be best sticking to their early EPs and three albums. But what has been collected is a great introduction to their sound and idiosyncratic songs. Dry The Rain, Dr Baker, It’s Not Too Beautiful being some of the highlights. . If pre-millennium tension and an early noughties take on mid-60s psychedelia with a mix of garden shed electronica with a cinematically orchestral scope is your thing, then you can’t go wrong with The Beta Band. Better still, check out their first “compilation” of the first three EPs released. Called, quite cunningly, The Three EPs. Their inherent culty coolness was lauded (and possibly ruined) by featuring in the film High Fidelity which, despite having a great soundtrack, appears to make a virtue of exactly the kind of music snobbery I hate...” .
