How Small and Midsize UK Manufacturers Prepare Production Lines for 2D Barcode Compliance
Every year, UK manufacturers lose contracts, customers, and market position, not because their products lack quality, but because their product traceability and coding processes cannot keep pace with modern supply chain expectations.
Buyers are asking more demanding questions. Retailers are tightening supplier requirements. Regulatory deadlines are moving closer. Within this environment, SME manufacturing UK businesses are being expected to deliver the same level of digital traceability for manufacturers as organisations many times their size, often with far fewer resources.
The reality is far more encouraging. The gap between where most SMEs are today and where they need to be is smaller than many assume. With the right coding and marking solutions, the right technology partner, and a clearly defined starting point, building robust packaging traceability is entirely achievable.
For production managers and operations directors seeking practical guidance rather than theory, this guide focuses on what genuinely matters: compliance readiness, technology selection, and clear next steps.
Why Digital Traceability Matters for SME Manufacturers
Compliance, Quality, and Consumer Trust
Traceability requirements across food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and industrial sectors continue to tighten. Regulatory bodies and major retailers increasingly expect manufacturers of all sizes to demonstrate effective product identification and end-to-end product traceability.
For SMEs, meeting these standards delivers tangible business benefits beyond regulatory compliance:
Reduced risk of costly product recalls
Faster identification and isolation of quality issues
Improved supply chain transparency
Enhanced protection against counterfeiting and fraud
Consistent, high-quality batch coding and date coding across production lines signals professionalism and reliability to buyers and end consumers alike. Strong traceability builds trust, strengthens brand reputation, and opens doors to larger supply chain partnerships.
Digital traceability for manufacturers is no longer a competitive advantage alone; it is fast becoming a baseline requirement.
Common Challenges Smaller Manufacturers Face
Budget and Resource Constraints
Investment in new industrial printing solutions can feel daunting when operating with tighter budgets and leaner teams. However, accessing advanced coding and marking solutions does not necessarily require significant upfront capital expenditure.
Flexible agreements and structured payment options make industry-leading technology accessible to SME manufacturing UK businesses. When implemented correctly, modern systems quickly deliver measurable value through reduced waste, improved efficiency, and enhanced compliance.
Integrating New Technology into an Existing Production Line
Concerns around downtime, compatibility, and operator training are entirely valid when introducing new CIJ printing, TIJ printing, laser coding, or LCM printing equipment.
A structured assessment of line speeds, substrates, packaging formats, and code requirements ensures seamless integration. Comprehensive operator training, combined with ongoing technical support, significantly reduces disruption and accelerates return on investment.
The right partner will evaluate your existing setup before recommending equipment, ensuring that new coding systems enhance rather than interrupt production.
Choosing the Right Coding and Marking Technology for Your Business
Matching Technology to Your Production Needs
Selecting the appropriate coding technology depends on your substrates, line speed, environment, and traceability requirements. There is no universal solution; the correct system must align with your specific operational demands.
Continuous Inkjet (CIJ Printing)
CIJ printing delivers fast, accurate marking across a wide range of materials, including plastics, glass, metals, and flexible packaging. It is particularly effective for high-speed lines requiring reliable batch coding, date coding, and variable data.
Thermal Inkjet (TIJ Printing)
TIJ printing offers high-resolution output with minimal maintenance requirements. It performs exceptionally well on cartons, films, and labels, making it suitable for manufacturers seeking clean, efficient coding with simplified operation.
Laser Coding
Laser coding provides a permanent, chemical-free marking solution. Particularly valuable within food, beverage, and pharmaceutical sectors, it delivers tamper-evident, high-contrast codes with no consumables beyond electrical power.
Large Character Marking (LCM Printing)
LCM printing systems apply clear, legible marks directly onto outer cartons and corrugated packaging. By printing directly onto secondary packaging, manufacturers can eliminate label stock and streamline operations while maintaining strong packaging traceability.
A comprehensive range of inks and consumables ensures compatibility across diverse substrates and environments, supporting long-term durability and barcode readability throughout the supply chain.
Future-Proofing Your Manufacturing Operation
GS1 2027 and the Move to 2D Barcodes
The upcoming GS1 Sunrise 2027 initiative represents a significant milestone for manufacturers. Under the GS1 2027 2D barcodes programme, 2D barcode formats such as QR codes and Data Matrix are set to complement traditional 1D barcodes at the point of sale.
For manufacturers, this transition presents both compliance requirements and commercial opportunities. Compared to 1D codes, 2D barcodes can carry substantially more data, enabling enhanced supply chain visibility, improved stock management, and richer product information.
Reviewing current CIJ printing, laser coding, or LCM printing capabilities against 2D barcode grading standards now will prevent rushed upgrades as deadlines approach.
Sustainability and Quality as Part of Your Traceability Strategy
Traceability and sustainability are increasingly interconnected. Retailers and consumers demand transparency regarding product origin, material selection, and environmental impact.
Accurate coding supports environmental accountability by reducing mislabelling, minimising waste, and enabling precise recall management. Modern industrial printing solutions also offer lower solvent consumption and environmentally considerate consumable options, helping manufacturers align compliance with sustainability objectives.
Conclusion
Digital traceability for manufacturers is no longer a future aspiration for SME manufacturing UK businesses. It is a practical priority influencing compliance, quality assurance, customer trust, and long-term competitiveness.
With the appropriate coding and marking technology, structured investment options, and specialist technical guidance, SME manufacturers can establish reliable product traceability systems that meet current operational demands and are fully prepared for future regulatory requirements, including the shift to GS1 2027 2D barcodes.

Win McCarthy Day Residue at 12th Street (Entrance), 2024 Epson 770 Ultrachrome ink, adhesive transparency, paper, dibond mount 89 x 25 ¼ inches
For a few months as I'm sure you can tell by my pfp I have been learning Tri-Stringer in Splatoon 3. I originally wanted to learn it year 1 of the game being out but at the time I found it way too difficult. As an Inkjet enjoyer seeing the 3rd kit for bow gave me enough motivation to try the weapon one more time. The learning process was slow but the moment I got 4 stars with the Bulbz Tri-Stringer everything just clicked! I can finally play a backline! Inkjet was already one of my best specials and Angle Shooter synergizes amazingly with the main weapon. I've even started enjoying the vanilla kit since Killer Wail helps you stand your ground more.
Above are my fits, very happy with them and I even managed to get the right chunks for the fit shown in my pfp.
Here's an example of how much I've improved. Solo holding the left side long enough for my team to jump back in and try to push again. I don't know about you but especially on bow, that's very impressive and I'm proud of myself! (We are going to ignore the random with the Rainmaker swimming into a bomb at the end.)
