My Journey to Being Media and Information Literate💗💚
As a part of Generation Z, I was astonished by the impact of social media on our daily life. Looking back on everything I've learnt from the first quarter to the second quarter makes my heart race because I'm so grateful that I've been able to become a better version of myself. I develop into a person with the ability to apply powerful knowledge to the proper use of our media and technology.
One of the most memorable aspects of my first semester of 12th grade was learning about the nature, purpose, and power of media, information, and technology. The introduction of these topics has opened my eyes to the vast world of societal advances. It reminded me that the three things I was taught were really beneficial to us, particularly in terms of the state of social communication during this pandemic. I was gradually becoming more aware of the impact of communication in these days of pandemic and how it plays a significant part in globalization. It immediately raises various concerns and threats that we must address, as it undermines or obstructs good communication.
“Media is trying to influence us all the time…”
It takes us to a point where this artificial world is considerably larger and scarier, since everyone has the ability to modify and distribute information that may have an impact on those around us.
The media, which is always in the middle and should be in the center of everything, it connects and facilitates the flow of communication from sender to receiver and vice versa. Because it was derived from the Latin word "medius," which means "middle," Media has always been in the "middle." The mass media, which broadcasts a wide range of information to a big audience, falls under this category. Being media, information, and technology literate refers to the ability to read, analyze, evaluate, and produce communication in a variety of formats, as well as the ability to recognize and use information effectively.
Furthermore, the evolution of various media and technologies from the Pre-Industrial Period to the Industrial and Electronic Ages to what we have now, the Information Age, has been observed, with each becoming noticeably more advanced. And it fascinates me to believe that the further growth of media could shape the future of communication. The information era has made me realize how complicated, high-tech, and strong our world's potential will be in the years ahead.
The development of more complex forms of media for disseminating news and information to people has made it easier and more accessible to everyone, reducing the outdatedness of others. However, with such a large number of media information sources, determining what is factual and what is simply fake news is challenging. As a result, it is undeniable that the majority of media users are vulnerable to fake news and other risks. We should be familiar with the many types of information sources (keep in mind that TIME is also a factor) from which we will collect the necessary data.
As a result of the numerous societal concerns that have arisen in the world of media and information technology, we, as users, should be aware of the current issues and problems, as well as other things (such as laws that have been enacted) in the media and technology world. Also, I'd like to mention that as I recall my memory studying this subject for the three past months. And, before it was taught to us, I was both shocked and concerned at how clueless I was about this subject. I am completely unaware of the present situation in the media and information technology fields. During that time, I realized how important it was for me to pay attention to every detail of the subject. So, if you're reading this, and you think that your knowledge regarding the world of media and information technology is insufficient, take your time to watch the Youtube video below, entitled “You're being manipulated and don't even know it” by Nate Pressner, in order to get a better idea of what I'm talking about:
The digital world has evolved significantly, and indeed, the internet world is growing increasingly perilous. With that being said, having the skills to remember and to gain knowledge from all the topics discussed above, gives everyone the opportunity to use the media and technology in the best and right way possible. As the wide place of this digital world extends everything that we can do in the actual world, there may be risks and threats towards our way in achieving our goals, we were also given a lot of opportunities and challenges to achieve a better society. The power of media and information is within us, and in order for us to use it effectively, we should never stop learning and to influence others to be a media and information literate individual. ❤
