can’t  help  but  feel  proud  of  that,     smile  undeniable  across  perfectly  painted  lips.     a  moment  to  appreciate  moment  before  business  head  is  back  on,     hands  sitting  upon  her  hips.     “   i  need  you  to  move  that  table  over  to  the  corner,      so  the  couch  can  go  where  it  was.   ”

“IT’S MY TURN TO DELIVER COFFEE, I THINK --------- ” she leans against the doorframe to his office, styrofoam tray in one hand, a folded brown bag of bagels in the other. when he shows up in the same fashion it’s usually because he knows she’s been in one place for too long, and the mix of her stubbornness and WORK ETHIC leaves little in the way for SNACK BREAKS, let alone full - on meals. when she brings them ---------------------- more often than not it’s a PEACE OFFERING of sorts; an ‘ I’M SORRY YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH MY CRAP on a regular basis ’ consumable apology.

today though ------ it’s just to stop by and say HELLO. and while she waits for him to join her in the doorway, it gives her a real chance to look around at the bits of red and green dotted around the office. especially the bit of red and green she hadn’t even realized she was standing under. “hey, matt ------” 

           “i think foggy might be trying to get you in TROUBLE,” she warns in a sing - song voice as her eyes stay fixed above now not just hers, but both of their heads. “you’ve got mistletoe up over your door.” (   better to warn him, right? even if it means foggy might be a little disappointed later on ----- she’ll have to remember to leave him a bagel or two as compensation.   ) which reminds her ----- the coffee she’s been balancing in her left hand isn’t just for her.

          “i’ve got a recon assignment next borough over, i should get going ... and i promise to really try to keep myself out of trouble,” she’s got an HONESTY STREAK going today ---- must be something in that coffee. his cup is nudged against his arm for him to take before she leans in to give him a goodbye KISS; she may not be the superstitious type, but a little here and there can’t hurt.  

(   she catches his cheek, but BARELY; it’s more the corner of his mouth than anywhere else ------- if the placement is the result of her just being in a hurry or INTENTIONAL she doesn’t say.   ) 

he’s spent his whole life running.  running, running,   R U N N I N G.  he doesn’t even know anymore what the right direction to go is because he’s switched up his run every time.  maybe that’s why it’s JOGGING around central park that actually makes him think better. . . or maybe the two things have nothing to do with each other.  perhaps he shouldn’t be a better athletic runner when all he does is RUN from his problems.

then again, that’s exactly what he’s doing right now.

usually they sleep over at tj’s -- you see tj lives in soho which is near. . . everything.  EVERYTHING MATT!  but matt lives in hell’s kitchen which is basically an entirely different world.  and so when they ended up north last night and crashed into matt’s couch instead of his, tj knew he’d have to suck it up in the morning.  after all  --  he has to get some writing done before work.

he thought he could keep matt from waking up, but it seems nearly running into the one lamp in the room has him completely turned around.  it’s that damn good hearing he is generally very grateful for.           “  no no don’t get up --  ”                   as if to emphasize his point he leans a knee into the bed so he can lean even further forward, locking with lips that always taste like sweet sweat for just the briefest of moments.

SHE WAS AWARE THAT SHE HADN’T DONE A VERY GOOD JOB HIDING HER FRUSTRATION EARLIER --------------- and she would be the first to admit she’s never been graced with whatever the auditory equivalent of a BEDSIDE MANNER would be. (    the real question in all of this should have been was she even trying to hide it in the first place.   )

either way, be it an intentional SLIP in her mask or not, whatever she’d said on the phone had been effective ------------- he wouldn’t be here now reminding her just how cantankerous she’d been earlier today. “in my defense, i’d only had two cups of coffee by that point,” “but i guess it’s nice to know that my POWERS OF PERSUASION still work even when i’m half asleep and in a crappy mood.”
