hey so ive exploring punk, and i have a question i dont think the softer types around tumblr can answer, sorry if its dumb or if it pisses you off, but ive been curious
what exactly is the, uh, 'appeal'? of the noisier subgenres like crust or d beat and stuff? not to be disrespectful but what makes it good? or does it take some kind of mindset to get it? cuz i really dont understand, still fascinating in a way
I have tried to write down the appeal for a little bit but realized that it is impossible. It has the same appeal as any music genre. I enjoy listening to it, and it makes me happy. Personally, what really started my obsession with the genres was seeing skitsystem live in like ~2018. I had been to a lot of smaller gigs with more "standard punk" bands at that time, but nothing before matched the energy from both the band and the crowd. I was acquainted with some raw punk/crust bands earlier but seeing it live just clicked for me. The genre also comes with a strong, tight-knit community both in person and online. I've met both my girlfriend of almost three years and my best friends through it.
Just like any extreme music genre, you have to get used to it. If you go from listening to dead kennedys to disclose, there is a big chance you are not going to like it.
If you want to get into it, some good starting off points would be these releases.
Discharge- why? (1981) the band that started it all. d in d-beat stands for discharge. This album is a clear continuation of the anarchopunk of bands like crass, but combined with motรถrhead-esque riffs and drumming but played faster. Being the originator of the genre means that it isn't as extreme as later bands.
Inepsy- Rock n roll babylon (2003) motรถrhead worshipping metal punk. The sweet spot right between motรถrhead and discharge. I love this band a lot. Out of all of the releases on this list this might be the "easiest" listen out of all of them.
Amebix- no sanctuary (1983) one of the first bands you can consider crust. This album is raw and heavy but is rather melodic and slow at times. There are clear influences from post punk.
Anti cimex- Scandinavian Jawbreaker (1992) some of the best riffs ever written, clean production, not as raw as their early releases. Metal punk at it's finest.
I love arguing with people online, but this isn't a sensitive subject or anything like that for me. Like most people into this, my life centres around this subculture. Feel free to ask anything else!
thinking of the inepsy patch i placed on the back of my shorts so the asshole looking hair would line up perfectly with my ass
(i really need to repair themโฆ I donโt like white thread on em anymore it would look better with black thread but oh well)
