“Shielding adds weight, changes balance, requires trickier field calibration. Plus this way you get free cooling.”
“Free cooling, but expensive repairs when the coils get clogged with particulates. Or worse if too much ionized dust gets in there and the field balance gets borked when you pull the trigger.”
“Can filter all that out in transmat. Anyway, you really think Omolon would roll out fusion pieces that’re gonna explode on their customers?”
“Even setting aside the rich history of capitalists’ disregard for the well-being of their customers, I think the simple fact is the lack of shielding is a poor and unsafe design choice for several obvious reasons, and I can’t imagine why any foundry would opt to produce fusion rifles without that shielding, even if they convinced themselves they’re not likely to explode.”
“Maybe the foundry engineers know more about designing fusion rifles than you. Think of that?”
“...I... That’s just... I mean, really... Dammit... The whole point is you don’t need to know a whole lot about fusion rifles to see how not including shielding over the induction coils is a bad idea!”
“Fine, fine, but maybe you do need to know a whole lot about fusion rifles to figure out how to make one that doesn’t need coil shielding.”
