IndiGrid commissions Gujarat BESS Private Limited at 180 MW / 360 MWh — one of India's largest standalone utility-scale BESS projects
IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust has commissioned Gujarat BESS Private Limited in Gujarat.
The project has a capacity of 180 MW / 360 MWh.
It is one of India’s largest standalone utility-scale battery energy storage system projects at a single location.
The commissioning marks a strategic shift for IndiGrid.
The trust is moving beyond pure transmission assets into grid-scale storage.
Storage milestone
The GBPL project comes at a critical time for India’s power system.
Renewable energy penetration is rising quickly.
Solar and wind generation are creating stronger intraday balancing needs.
Battery storage can absorb surplus renewable energy and discharge during peak demand.
This makes BESS one of the most important flexibility assets for India’s renewable-heavy grid.
National storage context
India’s National Generation Adequacy Plan has raised the country’s storage ambition to 174 GW by FY 2035-36.
This includes 80 GW of battery energy storage systems.
It also includes 94 GW of pumped hydro storage.
The GBPL commissioning therefore fits into a much larger national storage build-out requirement.
IndiGrid Q4 performance
The commissioning was disclosed alongside IndiGrid’s Q4 FY26 results.
Operational revenue stood at Rs. 874 crore.
This was up 9.5% year-on-year.
Operational EBITDA stood at Rs. 782 crore.
The EBITDA margin was 89%.
Q4 distribution per unit was Rs. 4.00.
Full-year FY26 numbers
For FY26, IndiGrid reported operational revenue of Rs. 3,311 crore.
This was up 3.1% year-on-year.
Operational EBITDA stood at Rs. 2,982 crore.
The EBITDA margin was 90%.
Assets under management stood at Rs. 33,815 crore.
Net debt-to-AUM stood at 57.6%.
Distribution guidance
IndiGrid delivered its FY26 distribution guidance of Rs. 16.00 per unit.
The trust also announced FY27 DPU guidance of Rs. 16.48 per unit.
This represents 3% year-on-year growth.
For unitholders, the BESS commissioning supports the trust’s diversification and future distribution visibility.
Transmission availability
IndiGrid also reported strong transmission asset performance.
Weighted average quarterly transmission availability stood at 99.54%.
This shows that the trust’s core operating platform remains stable.
The addition of BESS creates a new growth layer on top of its established transmission portfolio.
Revenue visibility
The Gujarat BESS asset has a PPA tenure of around 11.5 years.
This provides contracted revenue visibility.
For state utilities, the project can support peak management and renewable firming.
For Gujarat, it strengthens the state’s position as a renewable energy and storage hub.
Future BESS pipeline
IndiGrid has additional BESS assets in its pipeline.
These include 187.5 MW / 750 MWh at SJVN1 in Uttar Pradesh.
They also include 125 MW / 500 MWh at NVVN1 in Uttar Pradesh.
The Rajasthan BESS asset is also part of the pipeline.
These projects position IndiGrid as an early institutional platform in India’s battery storage market.
Strategic message
The commissioning of the 180 MW / 360 MWh Gujarat BESS project is a major milestone for IndiGrid and India’s storage market.
It shows that battery storage is moving from tender announcements to operating assets.
For IndiGrid, the project expands the business model beyond transmission.
For India’s grid, it adds much-needed flexibility for renewable integration, peak management, and future market balancing.
