Diwali is the festival of lights and one of the main festivals celebrated in India and Nepal. The festival usually lasts two days and is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month of Kartika.

Diwali is a religious festival also known as the Festival of Lights, it is a very important festival in India. One of the most popular festivals in Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the "spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance." The festival is widely associated with Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity and commemorates the return to the city of Ayodhya of Prince Rama after his victory over Ravana, king of demons. According to legend, the city's inhabitants filled the walls and roofs with lamps so that Rāma could easily find his way. From there began the tradition of turning on a multitude of lights at night.

Some days before Diwali, the celebrators will prepare by cleaning, renovating and decorating their homes and workplaces with diyas (oil lamps) and rangolis. During Diwali, people buy clothes, jewelry, light up the interior and exterior of their homes with diyas and rangoli, perform worship ceremonies for Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth, light fireworks, and participate in family festivities, where mithai (sweets) and gifts are shared.
