Smells Like Teen Spirit Gum
Prompt: Artemis almost discovers Robin’s secret identity.
- - -
Artemis is having one of those days where nothing has exploded, fallen on her, or otherwise gone wrong, but she still feels like shoving herself in a corner and eating ice cream. Except there isn't any ice cream left. And that counts as a bad day in her mood, so she sticks some candy in the freezer and grabs a bottle of water so she can wander around until they can act as poor substitutes.
It figures. The one day when Artemis isn't even idly wondering what Robin's eyes look like is the day that she catches Robin fiddling with his mask frantically in an empty hallway. He presses several times and mutters something, probably a mild "Darn". Whatever method he uses to stick the mask to his face isn't working. Artemis drinks, then clears her throat. However, Robin resists turning around.
"Why do you even bother?" Artemis asks. "I might know what your face looks like, but that doesn't mean I'll be able to put a name to it."
"Most people aren't that good with names," Robin says, turning around. "But they will recognize a face even if they've seen it once. We're visual creatures. Something in our brains."
"Who says I'm ever going to see you off-duty? You live in the Batcave and sleep upside down next to Batman in his coffin."
Robin laughs. "Is that what you think?"
"Nah." Artemis swigs. "I know you don't sleep."
He laughs even harder, then caps it with a very deep sigh. "That was only funny because it's true." Robin takes out a birdarang but doesn't throw it, only stares at it. Artemis crosses her arms when she realizes he's looking at her in the reflection.
"Good luck getting me to look away," she tells him. "I know that's how Batman taught you to disappear."
"Why are you being so contrary?"
"Ha! This isn't contrary. This is cheap tricks compared to how contrary you get sometimes."
"Well, Artemis--" He starts walking backwards, guided by his improvised mirror. "You are on the verge of discovering my secret identity, and being dreadfully persistent. This leaves me no other choice."
"What are you going to do?" Artemis caps her bottle, laughing. "Throw your cape at me and then run like Wally scenting food?"
"Good idea." He's about three feet away from her. "But no. I'm just going to close my eyes and do this."
Robin drops the batarang, whips around to face Artemis, and pulls her down in a surprisingly firm kiss for someone working blind. As he steers her backwards, Artemis drops her water bottle and grabs the back of his skull to try and keep him. Unfortunately, she does blink out of instinct because it's weird to keep eyes open while making out. Robin's hair glides out from under her hands, and a vent clatters open above them.
Next time she sees Robin, she's going to rip her mask off and make out with him in front of everyone for a few seconds before disappearing. See how he likes it.
