Child of Mors: Blood Ties
The King picked up the crisp envelope sitting on the desk in front of him, and opened it with great care. It contained only one sheet of paper. As the King unfolded it, Nyx felt his magic spark again and hid a wince.
With baited breath, and his heart hammering away in his chest like it could run away from this bizarre situation, he watched as King Regis read the sheet of paper. Something in the man's expression broke as he held the paper out with shaking fingers, for Nyx to take.
He knew. He knew what it was going to say without having looked at it. Still, he took the paper and read the cursed words, the taste of bile spreading on his tongue.
Relation between Regis Lucis Caelum and Nyx Ulric: 50%
The smell of ozone and burning wood hit Nyx's nose like a behemoth. The words started blurring in front of his eyes. He blinked. Was he crying? He heaved a shuddering breath and dared to look up. The King's green eyes had a suspiciously wet sheen to them.
Neither of them said a word as they looked at each other. What was there to say? Nyx's mind had gone empty and numb.
"What do you plan to do now?" Marshal Leonis's voice cut through the heavy silence.
He did not need to ask what the test said. Regis's face was answer enough. Clarus shifted, clearly not knowing what to think of the whole situation.
Nyx kept staring at King Regis. His brother. Fuck. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He closed it and felt a tear run down his cheek.
Concern and hope shone so blatently in the King's face, it hurt.
"Sia lüta akat ne," the King said, voice hesitant and accent atrocious. I am sorry.
Nyx jerked, eyes wide and mouth open. One hand clutched the armrest of his chair, the other had crumbled the sheet of paper, he still held on to.
"Hadnissa ossarto?" he asked, unsure if he had just dreamed it all up. You speak Hadnissa?
The King gave a nod, a hesitant smile played at the corner of his lips. "I taught myself when I learned I might have a brother who was born on Galahd," he said, switching back to Lucian.
"Father left paperwork. However it was only found mere days before Niflheim invaded Galahd."
"May-" Nyx's voice broke. He took a shuddering breath, feeling like he might just float away at any moment. "May I see it?"
"Yes, of course," the King said and reached for a folder to his right.
