MRS. DOUBTSHREK (1993)
Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) gets divorced from his wife, Miranda (Sally Field), but still wants to be a part of his children's lives. Using his voice acting talents, he disguises himself under a layer of makeup as an Ogre nanny called "Mrs. Euphegenia Doubt-Shrek." The ruse is successful and hilarity/real human drama ensue. The film won an Academy Award for best makeup, which is surprising considering there have been many other films that used makeup to create a Shrek character. It took about five hours per day to apply the makeup necessary to transform Williams into Mrs. Doubt-Shrek. The film is also notable for its portrayal of neat and tidy Ogre character, something that had rarely been presented before in cinema.
GONE WITH THE SHREK (1939)
An epic tale of war, love, and romance, Clark Gable stars as Shrek Butler, a Southern gentleman disowned from his family, who attempts to win the love of Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh), a difficult task considering that she loves another and he is an ogre. The film takes place both before, during, and after the Civil War and has a running time of over three hours. The film is controversial for its portrayal of African-American characters. The director, David O. Selznick, desperately wanted Clark Gable for the role of Shrek as he felt that only Gable's ogre-like complexion would work for the role. Because of Gable's similarity to Shrek, it only took about three-hours a day to apply the make-up and prosthetics.
PAUL SHREK: MALL SHREK (2009)
Paul Shrek (Kevin James) is an everyman schlub with dreams of becoming a police officer. However, because of society's negative opinions of ogres, he is relegated to being a mall Shrek. He soon falls for a kiosk worker named Amy (Jayma Mays), but his romance is complicated when the mall is held hostage by a criminal gang. Will Paul Shrek get the girl and save the mall? The character of Paul Shrek was created using motion capture. It took almost one hour per day to prepare the motion capture suit worn by Kevin James for the role.
