I just attended the NNEP show in Columbus this past weekend.  And as much as I enjoy going to the show and helping people make money with our equipment and supplies, it’s always a pleasant surprise when I listen to our customer’s help someone else make money with them!

While explaining the benefits of adding a vinyl cutter to someone’s business, I was interrupted by a customer that had been waiting to talk to me.  She told the folks that were listening to my explanation that the vinyl cutter they bought had paid for itself over and over again.  She actually went a step further and told these “newbies” that they needed a vinyl cutter to make their decorating business work!

But that wasn’t the best part...

I had already decided that I needed to be quiet and listen to my customer sell the vinyl cutter for me.  The best part was the additional business advice that they were willing to share with a couple people that they didn’t know who were just starting out.  This 15 year decorating expert told the “newbies” that if they did one thing and one thing only, it was to self promote!  And not with traditional advertising avenues…she didn’t say to buy an ad in the newspaper or put up a billboard or even send an email blast or open a facebook page. 

Her best advertising came in the form of hang tags!  On every shirt that leaves her shop, there’s a hang tag that lets the wearer know exactly who decorated their shirt.  It was so simple and made so much sense but for some reason I had never thought of it before?!

They could screen print 200 shirts for one customer but of those 200 shirts, 199 of the people who would be wearing them would have no idea where they came from but they were in need of custom decorated shirts – and what does a hang tag cost? 

Without doing too much googling, I found 1,000 2”x2” custom printed tags for $60.  That’s only 6 cents on every t-shirt!  Much less expensive than a newspaper ad or even a key word click through…and there’s no need for expensive samples because the person you’re advertising to with the hang tag is holding your work in their hands!
