I watched the sunrise with three strangers: A man with a camera and tripod, he smiled at me. The girl with him ignored me. Then an older woman sat down next to me and smiled. Her name is Laily, she moved to Williamsburg from India only two weeks ago. She asked me where I’m from, if I live in the neighborhood, if I’m married with children, and if I have family here. I learned that she’s widowed and has three children who are all successful in their careers. She’s having a difficult time adjusting to her new environment, but happy to watch the sunrise and have the opportunity to practice her English. The next time I see her on the pier, I’d like to give her these polaroids.
