over the past few months, i have conducted research regarding the brands that jennie supports and endorses. the bds movement, which focuses on boycotting, divesting from, and sanctioning companies that support israel, has existed for almost two decades but did not gain widespread recognition until october 2023. prior to that, 84% of the american population was reportedly unaware of the israel-palestine conflict.
i am unsure whether jennie was aware of the situation before it became more widely known. however, she has been affiliated with chanel since 2017 and became an official ambassador in 2019. it is important to note that chanel provided financial aid to israel in 2023–2024, well after jennie's appointment. as for the nature of her contract, k-pop contracts are typically very restrictive, and it is highly likely that she has little to no control over her endorsements.
regarding adidas, the brand faced criticism for its association with the israel football association (ifa). however, adidas ended its sponsorship in 2018 following campaigns by palestinian sports teams and activists . while some confusion arose in 2023 due to renewed discussions, adidas has not been affiliated with the ifa since 2018.
in addition, an anon sent me a link showing jennie drinking from a coca-cola cup. i do not know if she was promoting the brand, being paid to endorse it, or if it was simply an incidental moment. it is important to acknowledge that many of us stan &team, who recently collaborated with coca-cola. furthermore, most of my followers support hybe groups, since i write for two groups under that company.
i would like to clearly state that i do not condone the actions of any company involved in the ongoing genocide, regardless of their connection to the idols we support. it is important to remember that we stan the idol—not the brands that endorse them, their companies, or the corporate decision-makers behind them. whether it is jennie or any other artist, they typically do not have full autonomy over their promotional activities and are often contractually obligated to follow their management's decisions.
while some might argue that jennie is an independent artist following her contract termination with yg entertainment, she continues to work with a management team, indicating that not all decisions are solely hers.
i am not making this post to defend jennie personally, as i do not know her. rather, i would like to share the observations i have gathered. for instance, jennie is known to be openly good friends with palestinians who actively speak out against the genocide. there is also a photo of her holding a "flower bomber," a famous anti-war art piece depicting a masked palestinian throwing a bouquet of flowers instead of a bomb — symbolizing a desire for peace and freedom.
i want to make it absolutely clear that my support for jennie is rooted in her music, to which i am deeply attached. her current company has no public record of being pro-israel. over the past month, i have struggled with choosing an idol representative. while i initially chose meovv, and although i admire the group, i have not felt fully satisfied with my decision. after thorough research and considerable thought, i have decided to return to using jennie as my idol representative.
