Word Count: 2193

Summary: It's been 18 months since Judai last saw his friends. But he has kept in contact. Honest. He says 'hi' every now and then, sometimes even asks them how things are going if he has time and isn't running for his life. But still, something missing. And maybe it should stay that way.
Chapter 1
It had been a long 18 months of gallivanting around the world, saving spirits and strengthening the bond between them and humans. He even traveled through time recently. That wasnât to say Judai didnât love his newfound purpose. It led him to many breathtaking sights, just the right amount of thrilling adventures, interesting people and even more intriguing spirits. But it was also a life of constant going, never staying one place too long, never able to slow down, barely having enough time to send more than a quick message to his friends, checking in, letting them know he was still alive. So, when a case forced him to return to Domino City, he finally gave into Yubel's nagging and took a few days for himself.Â
Currently, he planted himself at a cafe facing Domino City Plaza. A cozy little place, perfect for people watching as he sipped at his tea and devoured his croissant (occasionally sneaking a bite to Pharaoh every now and then to bribe him into staying hidden). But even in the peacefulness where he found all the time in the world, his phone remained at the bottom of his pack, messages all unanswered. He just wanted one day without heaviness in his chest.Â
However, a famous head of spikey hair interrupted this peace. At this point he had met the King of Games about three times. Four if he wanted to count that weird time bubble where he met a younger Yugi after being sent there by the present-day one as a separate instance. But no matter how many times Judai came face to face with him, he was still starstruck enough to be a little shy offering his extra seat when the rest of the tables sat occupied.Â
âItâs been a while,â Yugi greeted. âThough it might be shorter for youâŚâ
âYou remember that? So, you knew all this was going to happen already?â
Yugi shrugged. âPretty much.â
âNo warning, huh?â
âWell, we didnât have much time for deep conversations when weâve met in the present.â
âAhâŚTrueâŚâ
âAlso, thereâs probably rules against that kind of thing, less we mess up the timeline.â Yugi leaned forward, resting his cheek on his hand. He was such a strange mix of confidence and shyness. A mixture of his younger self and who he became thanks to that other soul. But Judai was the same, wasn't he? Not quite who he was before but collecting bits and pieces to add to who he had become. âSo, what brings you back to Domino?â
âOhâŚuhâŚI got a tip about a handful of missing duel spirits only to find a branch of a poaching ring I had been chasing for the past six months. Took that down and now Iâm just taking some time for myself.âÂ
âFinally,â Yubel added at the back of his mind.
âThatâs good,â Yugi mused, sipping at his coffee. âYou need to slow down when you can or else youâll be run ragged by the time the bigger challenge shows up.â
âI donât know how much bigger you can get after defeating darkness incarnate,â Judai chuckled.
âStill. You need to rest between adventures so youâre stronger for the next, bigger or not. It keeps you safe but also keeps others safe too.â
Judai scratched the back of his neck, a sheepish grin rumbling across his face. âOkay. I will, I will.â
âHow have you been? Beyond your adventures I mean.â
Judai shrugged. âGoodâŚâ
âYou donât sound sure.â
âMostly good.â
âThat isnât much better.â Yugi didnât push it much farther than that. Not verbally at least, even Judai could tell what that piercing look in his eye meant. Yet his smile was still ever so kind as always. And maybe thatâs how he got Judai to spill all his guts.
âI honestly donât know whatâs up.â Words traffic jammed in his mind as they all tried to rush out at the same time. âLike beforeâŚDueling lost its fun and all, but I was aware of that. And thanks to youââÂ
âKuri!â Winged Kuriboh pipped up from his deck.Â
âAnd Winged Kuriboh,â Judai added with a ghostly smile, âI was able to get thatâŚthat spark back. And for the first time since I got back fromâŚâ he shook his head. He was already saying too much. No need to complicate things further. âIt had been a while since I felt I could smile, genuinely, and enjoy myself like I used to.â
Yugi nodded along.Â
âAnd Iâve been doing a lot better since then. But these last few months IâŚThatâŚLike I feel somethingâs missing again, but itâs different this time. Dueling makes me feel better for a bit, so I know Iâm not falling into the same hole butâŚIt doesnât last.â
Yugi took a few more sips of coffee, ruminating on the information. Judai tried to do the same with his tea to try and calm his nerves, only to cringe finding it lukewarm.Â
âHave you talked to any of your friends about it? Maybe theyâd have some insight.â
âEhâŚAbout thatâŚâ
âJudai.â
The King of Games sounded like Johan. Something prickled at the back of Judaiâs throat. âIâve beenâŚbusy.â
Yugi gave an unimpressed look. âLook Judai. I donât know you as well as your friends, but I think thatâs what your issue is. I know youâre kind of like how I was, with another soul in youââ
Judai nearly dropped his mug. âYou can see Yubel?â
âNot quite. Sometimes I could catch a glimpse. But really it was Atemâmy other soulâwho could sense them. Th-Thatâs besides the point. I understand there is comfort in that and that youâre never truly alone thanks to it. ButâŚthat doesnât mean you donât need friends outside of yourself.â
âI-I talk to themâŚsometimes.â
Yugi quirked a brow and this time Yubel joined him in his judgement.
âI do! Most of them at leastâŚTime zones and scheduling is difficult. Genuinely. ButâŚâ
âBut?â
Judai tapped along the mugâs handle, eyeing the cooled amber liquid instead of Yugi. âI donât knowâŚMaybe itâs for the best.â
âAnd why do you say that?â
Judai couldnât help laughing at the whole situation. A little on the hollow side, but heâd take what he could get at this point. âYouâre starting to sound like a therapist.â
âYou need one,â came Yubelâs unhelpful quip.Â
Yes, because Iâm sure a therapist would totally take it well when I bring up how I was a genocidal tyrant in another world or that fused my soul with a duel monster spirit that got me into all this in the first place.
He cringed almost immediately at how harsh it came across even if it was fact. Yubel was stunned and their pain radiated through Judaiâs body. They said no more and retreated further towards the back of his mind.
âJudai?â Yugi called, eyebrows furrowed. âNot to interrupt you two butâŚIt would probably help talking about it. I know this is more than just friends drifting apart in adulthood. Given how I found you on your graduation day, something went down to change you from the bright-eyed boy I first gave Winged Kuriboh to.â
Judai bit his lip. âItâs complicated. And a long story. Andâ"
âYouâre talking to the guy who was the vessel for a 3000-year-old ancient Egyptian pharaoh. I used these excuses too.â
âFine,â Judai gritted out. He squeezed his eyes shut, took a breath, and laid everything out. How the pressure started to build in his second year when everyone was relying on him to save the day. How in his third year he finally found someone he could rely on but that was also when Yubel showed up, stole that person from him and he abandoned his friends in search for him, almost getting them killed.Â
âAnd that wasnât even the worst part,â his voice was shaking now. âIâŚIâŚdid a lot of bad things after that. Trapped in my own mind. And everything was my fault to some degree. Yubelâs pain, Johan getting taken, everyone else dying or almost dying or temporarily dying or whatever. And all those monstersâŚThere is no forgiving what I did to them. At least with my friends I never meant to hurt them. But the monstersâŚâ
âHey,â Yugi murmured, reaching across to envelop Judaiâs clenched fist. Everything quieted. But only briefly until Yugi let out a sigh. âCome on, letâs get some air.â
Judai nodded slowly, allowing Yugi to guide him out into the street. They found a corner just a little ways from the cafe, away from the small crowds that often accumulated in the plaza. Pharaoh wandered out of his bag but remained seated on the ledge behind them. Judai gave the cat a pained smile. Wordlessly, Yugi offered him a tissue.Â
âI do talk to themâŚâ Judai emphasized once he dislodged the lump in his throat and ran the tissue along the edge of his eyes. âOver text. Say âhiâ and ask how things are going sometimes.â
Yugi gave an understanding nod. âI know what itâs like feeling like a danger to the people you love.â
âReally?â Judai huffed.Â
â3000-year-old pharaoh remember. Suddenly I had a lot of enemies coming for me. And naturally, my friends more than once got caught in the crossfire. Brainwashed, souls stolen, and just being nearly killed in general.â He fell silent, staring off to the side. âIt hurts and it is hard not to feel responsible. But Atem and I couldnât have defeated the evil we did without their support, nor could I have ever put his soul to rest without them. Even if it was just a verbal reassurance that we werenât alone.â
âI donât knowâŚIâve gotten along fine this far. I love my friends butâŚI donât knowâŚI was always saving them. And Iâd do it in a heartbeat butâŚwhat I guess Iâm trying to say is, I never had a Jonouchi I could constantly rely on. Not that they didnât try to help butâŚâ
Yugi raised a brow. âAre you sure about that?â
Judai tilted his head, eyes squinted until it dawned on him and that lump returned. âI donât know if heâdâŚâ
âYou went through this all for him yet youâre going to throw everything away now?â
Judai furiously shook his head. âI fused with the thing that tortured him. Imprisoned him. Took over his bodyâŚViolated him at every turnâŚâ
âHave you talked to him about it at least?â
âWellâŚNo. Last time we saw each other, the world was kind of ending and I was still lost. Like even more lost than I am now, I mean.â
âAnd you fought together?Â
âYes,â Judai drew the word out, side-eyeing Yugi who was forever calm and collected, lazily reclining on the edge of the flower bed. Â
âAnd itâs thanks to him you succeeded?â
âYes.â
âYou see what Iâm getting at?â
Judai pressed his lips together until the muscles hurt.Â
âYou miss him, donât you?â Yugiâs voice went soft; a hint of pain laced amongst the vibrations. âDonât try to hide it. I know that look. I see it regularly on myself.â
âIt hurts,â Judai choked out, âwhen I think of life without him, but it also hurts seeing a life with him. I dragged him into such a mess, there is no way I couldââ
âBonds are the strongest power of all, Judai. Talk to him, let him decide if he wants you in his life. You will only hurt him more if you keep going on like this. That goes for all your friends.â
Judai swallowed thickly. Itâs not that he hadnât considered that this was what was missing, but still, maybe it was better it stayed missing.
âThink about it,â Yugi said, handing him a brochure. Judai blinked down.Â
âA duel tournament?â
âAll the champions from around the world will be here in Domino for the next two weeks. One of the partnerships is with the Marufuji League. Now might be as good a time as any to take that first step.â
Judai gave another hollow laugh. âI thought you said, âthink about it.ââ
âYou should, but you should also know everything has fallen into place almost perfectly. And like I said, it runs for two weeks starting tomorrow. So, you still have some time to think.â
âThinking hasnât exactly been my strong suit.â
Yugi shrugged. He pulled a notepad out of his bag and scrawled something on it. âI have to get back to the game shop, but hereâs my number. I think you need someone to talk to outside yourself, might as well have someone who did the whole hero thing too. If you ever need anything, just ask.â
Despite how heavy he still felt, Judai cracked a smile as he stared down at the numbers. âHere you go saving me again, huh?â
âI wouldnât say âsaved'. Youâre the one who has to actually take that step. But Iâll help you where I can.â
âThank youâŚreally,â Judai whispered. Yugi parted with a tap on his shoulder, and one last kind smile.
i like to think Judai and Johan both secretly have a copy of Rainbow Life and use it as a way to identify each other during situations where it's difficult to tell who's who
the card itself is pretty simple in terms of effects
it's pretty useful depending on the situation you're in during a duel
it can be used to recover LP to live more attacks so you can attempt to draw the card you need
it can be used to counteract a monster/spell/trap effect that would cause damage to your LP whenever you attack or do something similar, or
something i haven't thought of but is something this card can do
and even though Judai and Johan never actually used Rainbow Life (if I'm wrong on this, tell me, it's been a while since I've watched the GX Sub), i feel like they both have it in their deck holder just in case they ever feel like they need it
Reasons why i think they have this card:
Johan:
I feel this card suits him very well, because Gem Beasts and Rainbow Dragon
He wouldn't send his Gem Beasts to the Graveyard on purpose if it was going to be in vain
He's super mega gay for Judai (this one's another headcanon of mine, lmao)
Judai:
Pretty much the same reasons as Johan, except replace the words "Gem Beasts" with "Elemental Heroes" and "Rainbow Dragon" with "Elemental Hero Neos"
He's super duper gay for Johan (owo)
Emergency Provisions(tm)
Lots of low-ATK monsters in his deck in general
now imagine Haou Judai looking through the cards in his deck holder, finding Rainbow Life, and immediately thinking of Johan because of it rndvsnjdnfndnsm-
anyway, that's a headcanon of mine
hope you enjoyed looking through this block of text
