Summary:

“You’re a watcher.” Gem hisses, “You were working for them the whole time.” Gem accuses, but she barely sounds angry. Just. Sad?

“Gem, I—” She doesn’t know what to say. It doesn’t matter though, because Impulse groans and rolls himself onto his back, and his eyes flutter open.

“Pearl?” He rasps, and Pearl can only stare, frozen, “They hurt you…”

She sobs again, but no tears come.

“Why would they hurt you?” Pearl crawls over to him and takes his hand, holding it, grip tight in a way she hopes to be reassuring, “You were one of them,” Her heart almost breaks at the turmoil written so clearly on his face, “They should have kept you safe.”

Why would they hurt me? Pearl thinks, and wracks her mind for any reason. Yes, she disobeyed, she didn’t know what to do, but… That had never happened for the months she had lived with Gem. She didn’t know plenty, and she was never hurt for it. She made mistakes, and the most that came of it was a downtrodden sigh and an explanation of what she did wrong.

Wasn’t I one of them? Why wouldn’t I be safe from my own kind?

Or;

Pearl learns to love in the arms of Gem and Impulse.
