Lesson 6
3 general levels of respect when using honorifics;
1: Informal low respect
2: Informal high respect
3: Formal high respect
VERBS
Past tense
1) Instead of adding ์๋ค/์๋ค to a stem, remove ๋ค and add ์ด after ์/์/์
๋๋ ๋จน์์ด (๋จน + ์์ด) = I ate
2) Just add ์ to the end of the informal low respectย conjugations
์ ๋ ๋จน์์ด์ (๋จน + ์์ด์) = I ate
3) After adding ์/์/์, instead of adding ๋ค add ์ต๋๋ค
์ ๋ ๋จน์์ต๋๋ค (๋จน + ์์ต๋๋ค) = I ate
Present tense
1) All you need to do is add ~์/์ด/์ฌ to the stem of the verb:
๋๋ ํญ์ ์ ๋ ์ ์์์ ๋จน์ด = I always eat food in the evening (๋จน + ์ด)
2) This is done in the exact same way asย โinformal low respectโ except you also add ~์ to the end of the word.
์ ๋ ํญ์ ์ ๋ ์ ์์์ ๋จน์ด์ = I always eat food in the evening (๋จน + ์ด์)
3) To conjugate using the formal high respect form, you add ~ใ ๋๋ค/์ต๋๋ค to the end of the word stem. If the stem ends in a vowel the first is used and if it ends in a consonant you use the latter. For example:
์ ๋ ํญ์ ์ ๋ ์ ์์์ ๋จน์ต๋๋ค ย = I always eat food in the evening (๋จน + ์ต๋๋ค)
Future tense
1) Instead of adding ๊ฒ ๋ค to a word stem, remove ๋ค and add ์ด after ๊ฒ (๊ฒ ์ด)
๋๋ ๋จน๊ฒ ์ด = I will eat (๋จน + ๊ฒ ์ด)
2) Just add ์ to the end of the informal low respect conjugations
์ ๋ ๋จน๊ฒ ์ด์ = I will eat (๋จน + ๊ฒ ์ด์)
3) After ๊ฒ , instead of adding ๋ค add ์ต๋๋ค
์ ๋ ๋จน๊ฒ ์ต๋๋ค = I will eat (๋จน + ๊ฒ ์ต๋๋ค)
ADJECTIVES
Adjectives are conjugated in the exact same way as verbs are when using these honorific endings. The main difference between conjugating adjectives and verbs is when it comes to the plain form. To conjugate sentences withย โinformal low respect,โย โinformal high respect,โ andย โformal high respectโ, follow the same rules as for verbs.
Lesson 5
This lesson is much longer than the previous ones, but it features many important grammatical principles that are crucial to understanding Korean grammar throughout the rest of my study of the language.ย
Lesson 4
Using adjectives with ~ใด/์
When using an adjective to describe a noun, ๋ค is eliminated and ~ใด/์ is added to the stem. These nouns described by adjectives can be used anywhere in a sentence.
For words in which the last syllable of the stem ends in a vowel,ย ~ใด is added to the last syllable (for example, ํฌ๋ค becomes ํฐ, which is then followed by a noun.ย ํฐ๋ฐฐ = big boat)
For words which the last syllable is a consonant, ~์ follows the last syllable of the stem. (e.g ์๋ค becomes ์์, which could be used like this: ์์ ๋จ์ (small man)
When an adjective ends in ์๋ค, you attach ~๋ to the stem. An example of what this looks like is ย ๋๋ ๋ง์๋ ์์์ ๋จน๋ค (note the verb isnโt conjugated as this will be learned later)
๋ง๋ค ย To be many/a lot of
An adjective to describe that there is a lot of or are many of something. The translation depends on how it is used in a sentence, so itโs up to common sense/interpretation which it translates to. When translating Korean to English it is better to focus on the meaning rather than the exact translation.
Particle ~๋
Particle meaning too or as well. Can replaceย subject or object particles. ย ย When replacing the subject it emphasizes the subject is also doing something, while replacing the object indicates that they do this thing also.ย
A simple example is the difference between the following;
I speak Korean too (as well as other people) and I speak Korean too (as well as other languages)
