INK Vancouver — 2023: The Decision to Continue Rebuilding
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization officially declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Within days, public gathering restrictions were introduced across Canada and many of the events that formed the foundation of INK Vancouver were cancelled.
The years that followed were focused on adaptation rather than growth.
By the spring of 2022, event activity began to return. However, this was not a return to normal.
Recovery was gradual. Schools, community organizations, corporate clients, and event organizers slowly resumed in-person activities. For INK Vancouver, 2022 remained a rebuilding year rather than a normal operating year.
By 2023, revenue was beginning to return.
At that point, the obvious decision would have been to welcome back those revenues and finally benefit from the recovery.
Instead, the company chose a different path.
The decision was made to continue operating with the mindset developed during the pandemic years. Rather than extracting profits, resources were reinvested into the business.
Equipment was upgraded. Operational systems were improved. Insurance and compliance requirements were strengthened. Investments were made in branding, infrastructure, and long-term client relationships.
The objective was not to maximize short-term profitability.
The objective was to build a stronger company.
Looking back, this may have been one of the most important strategic decisions in the company’s history.
The growth that followed was not simply the result of the market returning. It was the result of choosing reinvestment when it would have been easier to stop rebuilding.
In many ways, 2023 became the bridge between recovery and growth.
