Transgender and Education
The article about the transgender women of color being a victim of homicide hit close to home on Monday. As someone who identifies as Ā a transgender woman, I know the struggle of how it can feel unsafe to just walk outside my house. I am involved in the LGBT community as I work in the SJE office and living in an LGBT living and learning community and I see articles all the time about another trans woman (especially of color) killed and many times a lot of the murderers are people that they know. Not only that, there is such a high rate of suicide for trans folk.
Fortunately the more we talk about these issues, the more that can be done for Transgender issues. The more we educate others on what transgender is the more the lack of knowledge is eradicated and this world would be a safer place for transgender people of all colors. In this case, education could save lives because the more trans people are understood the less alone and isolated they will feel.
