Valentine’s Day had passed just like every other day in this city. The days seemed to roll together for her, very few different from the rest. She was still working, of course, constantly researching to find out what she could and possibly find a way out. But nothing was coming of it. Jacob’s arrival had granted her some small form of relief, but even so she still had yet to settle.
Perhaps the holiday would’ve meant something to her if she had someone to spend it with. Or rather, if that someone were with her. But wasn’t that selfish to wish this fate upon Henry? She asked herself this time and time again, even though she knew he would want to be with her. Still, it helped somehow to think he might be better off without her, safer and happier anywhere but here. It was bittersweet, yes, but it was something.
She had heard through eavesdropping that there were often a lot of sales the day after Valentine’s Day as stores had to get rid of their now useless stock. Admittedly, she hadn’t cared about that, until she ran into a rather large stand of flowers on her way back to her apartment. She was drawn to them, though she currently felt more bitter than sweet. Evie turned a red tulip over in her hands, noting how it was already starting to wilt. There were other flowers, some of them not near death, but this was... this was what she wanted. Bringing herself out of her head, she turned to try and find a clerk so that she could purchase the flowers. Instead her gaze was met by one she knew all too well, and she could feel the rate of her heart beat quickening.
Henry.
There wasn’t any time for her to think of personal feelings or missions or if this was embarrassing or not. For once in her life, Evie acted without thinking, embracing her fiancé as tightly as she could.
“Henry!”
No, she wasn’t going to cry- she wouldn’t let herself, but... she would admit she was close. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down.
“I.. I missed you.”
