There's no more entertaining way to handle a joke than to take it extremely seriously—or so Hakkai believes, anyway. It's gotten him into plenty of adversarial conversations with the company he keeps in the past, but that's exactly why it's so entertaining. He scratches at his chin, deliberately contemplative.

"Law isn't exactly my strong suit, but I'd say, hypothetically… It would really depend on the two people involved, as well as the judicial system they were under and its will and ability to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this hypothetical man was behind the murder." Like a teacher explaining something to a class of students, he smiles passively, then carries right on. "Of course, a more lax and accusation-based system of justice would likely make the assumption of guilt, since it would actually be quite difficult to fall with enough impact to kill someone with the force a person could deliver with a rock. The more evidence-based the system is, the more this man could probably get away with. And that's not even accounting for the murky laws surrounding neutral territories like space, as well as the complications of particular citizenship…"

He trails off, smiling brightly.

"Of course, this hypothetical man would most definitely become a social pariah once he made it back to Earth either way, so regardless of the official verdict I doubt he'd have a particularly good life afterward. Does that answer your question?"

There are different types of tension—the kind that brews and simmers slowly and quietly, and the kind that breaks dams with its hidden intensity: pure resentment and challenge, wrapped in one too many words said at just the right time. What kind of definition fits their exchange, she cannot say for certain. As still as a statue, the girl observes him with round eyes, neck slightly bent, and a spark in her heart igniting at his question. Why — wouldn't the answer be obvious to the young man too ?

She's well aware of his family, even if mostly by fame and name; the sins of their fathers, and their fathers' fathers—wars begun but never ended by their makers, playing and deciding of lives and deaths like gods. a smirk crosses her lips.

To be blunt: Verso Dessendre, the middle child of the illustrious Painter family, is tired of the conflict between the Guilds, and he has put as much distance between them as he possibly can. That is his parent’s domain, and however much his elder sister has thrown herself into it all, he despises the politics and doesn’t have the nerve or patience for it besides. 

Of course, that doesn’t mean he can actually separate himself from it; his last name ties him to it, pulls him in like an anchor. The middle child, the unruly one, the one who has chosen music of all things! The rumor mill is ever busy, busy, and it lingers sour on his tongue.
