Le sigh.
I stumbled upon the Illrigger class and was ecstatic that I now had a clear idea for what to do with a winged tiefling ("Uh... I'm a demon. Actually, more of a devil..."). However, the more I look, the more irritated I am getting about limitations and oddities:
You get one (1) "combat mastery" option, which is not the same thing as weapon mastery; it's more like a fighting style feat. Problem is, it isn't a feat, so if (say) you want the one that gives you a Barbarian-esque unarmored but shield-bearing AC (off of Cha), you can't also get the one that doubles the range of your main class feature and lets you fire ranged attacks in melee without provoking gathwacks of opportunity (the one that's probably the most useful, particularly for the caster subclass). There's also the one that's essentially Pact of the Blade, but not quite as good. For comparison, Hexblade can get at-will mage armor and Pact of the Blade, which is not quite the same thing but close.
You get neither a combat style feat nor any weapon masteries, so it's clear the revised class wasn't made with 2024 in mind.
The caster subclass in the revised version only gives 4th-level spells, a la Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster, but the class is designed after the Paladin and used to have even sixth-level spells (weirdly). The spell list is also really, really small. (Speaking of, fire bolt or produce flame? It gets the former.)
Forked Tongue really should just give you bonus languages (like other class's features), not this odd middle ground. (In certain games, it's probably useful, but I'd rather get it once and then get another Combat Mastery.)
From what I can tell (not having yet seen the revised PDF), 5e Tools' version has mistakes in the table and missing information in the text that could be extremely important.
The naming conventions in this are suspect. For example, I saw the name and thought "pirate" (ill + rigger).
The main mechanic is really odd. You place a sigil (a "seal") on a target and then burn it to deal damage and maybe other things. The damage is very cantrip-esque, but it's a limited resource.
Couldn't this have some non-devil flavor baked in, too? Like demonic flavor. I can haz flavor pls kthnxbai.
Don't get me wrong, it still looks like a decent class. It's certainly better than the Blood Hunter.
Better Ranged Fire Cantrip
Fire Bolt (more range, higher damage)
Produce Flame (saves you needing torches or a second of your 3 total cantrips)
I am taking part in Artfight this year! I go by Inge on that site. I am focusing on friends, but I decided it was a good idea to show some of my characters. This is Neynor, my orc illrigger!
Another commission done! Thank you for commissioning me!
sometimes your blorbo is a little guy, but hes also an edgy ass class so you have to give him an edgy little rendering. but hes still just a little guy
