I was gonna put this in another sketch dump, but this is one of my favorite Illenrys doodles and I wanted to make it its own post. Rolling a natural 1 on spellcraft while casting at too high a level and riding the ricochet into bodyhorrortown was such an iconic moment for him.

Oh my god I wrote so much about Illenrys that tumblr literally won't let me add more tags to that post. I didn't even get to the worst part of it. I wanted him to fail.
Seriously, I love that he got a happy ending because I love Illenrys, he's by far my favorite character I've ever gotten to play, but it would've been so much more satisfying if he failed in the end. I wanted his hubris to collapse in on itself, his wax wings to melt with victory at his fingertips, and for the only thought in his mind as he falls back to earth to be, "I was so close." Victory is fine, but it's hollow, and in the canon ending, he's too fucked up on eldritch madness to care.
The ending I had in mind for Illenrys would have seen him forced to pick himself back up, reckon with his bad decisions and the evil he's been working to spread, and face consequences, and atone. I wanted him to be forced to accept the fact that he can't just rewrite the world from scratch, he has to take it as it is, and hope it accepts him back after all he's done to it.
It is super cool that he got the ending that he wanted, and he and Tycho are allowed to just kinda fuck about with the laws of reality and recklessly create and experiment and build and learn and grow together, but it would have been cathartic to see him fall on his face.
But that's what Ven is for! :D
