But it is not. Growing up, Kaleb suffered heavy neglect and disdain from his father: it was never anything physical, but Jörn’s words always cut deep. As a young man he was the complete opposite of what he was now, a shy boy who found no real place for him. Not allowed to leave, and knowing full well how he would never earn the respect of both his father and his brother. 

Ellise was always in a similar situation. As soon as she gave birth to Svein, her “usefulness” was expended. As to why they had Kaleb after, it is a question that will remain unanswered. She saw in her second child a chance to live, a chance to do something. Kaleb had nothing, and so she clung to her. She taught him about music and arts, things she adored and that she wanted to pass on. To Jörn, both Ellise and Kaleb were “mistakes that should not be brought to light”. It is no wonder a meek child would always hide behind his mother, barely appearing in any family portraits because of that.

His mother was his safe haven, someone to admire and someone that he wanted to keep close. Losing her made his obsession go from ‘adoration’ to ‘worshiping’. She is the ideal woman, the ideal person. 

She is everything he wishes he could be, and life made him anything but. An eternal reminder that she would not approve of anything that he does, that what he became is the reflection of a man that has brought them nothing but despair.
