âHmph.â How like Him that soft sound was, as was the haughty jerk of the head, but that was all it was: sound and motion, nothing concrete and with no knowledge that it was a mirrored act. He had never met Him, after all.
But the boy...
He had no idea why the boy was so special. Wasnât he like all the others? Motherless little things no one wanted?
Why did Cloud want him so badly?
It lit a glimmer of curiosity in an otherwise-empty gaze.
âWho are you.â
Blinking...Denzel didnât really understand the question.
âI donât know what you mean.â Thereâs an innocence in him despite everything heâs seen. An inability to see himself as anything other than a lost child. Something that could be cast away. Except he had been at ground zero, watched the first victim succumb to the geostigma. Had sat on the floor under a table as the meteor fell right above his head. The life stream had flowed through him, he carried the evidence of that on his forehead, the blank mottled marks now making their way down the side of his face.
âIâm just Denzel.â That was all. A shrug of both his shoulders. âItâs not true is it?â Thereâs no disappointment in his voice. A cold, factual statement. âYou canât help us really. Can you?â
