For over 10 years, ocean users in Cape Town, South Africa, have had Shark Spotters at local beaches, watching over them, spotting sharks. We have an opportunity to bring this to Australia!
CROWD FUNDING CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED: In conjunction with Sea Shepherd Australia, we are fundraising to bring Shark Spotters over from Cape Town South Africa to Australia. The plan is for them to visit South-West WA, Northern NSW and Coolangatta in QLD to ascertain whether this initiative would be suitable in these areas. To bring the field officer and managing director over we are looking at $8,000 for flights, accommodation, meals, petrol, hall hire for community events and advertising of these events. We already have raised $2,000 but can you assist us further? https://www.chuffed.org/…/bringing-shark-spotters-to-austra…
No Shark Cull has no knowledge of, nor do we condone the sabotaging of shark nets. We have no knowledge of nets being cut in Freshwater or Curl Curl to release animals - the proper procedure would be to contact NSW fisheries to have them contact the shark meshing program contractor and remove the animal hopefully before it dies. No Shark Cull is opposed to the culling of sharks using shark meshing (gill nets) and drum lines throughout Australia and will continue to campaign, by lobbying politicians, engaging the community in protests, forums and educational events in a law abiding manner. We believe that non-lethal methods and public education will be more effective at keeping people safer than culling sharks whilst keeping our marine life safe. This article is interesting as the FSC (fisheries scientific committee) makes many comments in the latest report into the shark meshing program that not enough science is being done. Over the last 5 years the FSC have asked that the Fisheries Dept remove the statement that the shark meshing program is working as they have no scientific evidence to back that statement up. Fisheries continue to claim the program is working despite a lack of evidence
