Ancient Olympic Village
Ancient Ilida is located in North West Peloponnese. The main target of this state was the organization of the Olympic Games in Olympia. All athletes were required to appear in Ilida one month before the Games for the necessary workout.
The traveler Pausanias referred to Ilida as a city with gymnasiums, lodges, sanctums and temples, but no public buildings. Its theatre was built during the 4th century B.C. and was reconstructed during the Hellenic and Roman times. The audience didn't sit on tiers but, on the sloaps of the theatre. A complete sewage system was installed to prevent flooding. The operation of the theatre stopped after Roman times and it was transformed into a cemetery!
Ancient Ilida was one of the sites that became known during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. An amazing museum was built in the area and travelers have slowly slowly begun to acknowledge its importance in the ancient world. Think of the city as a giant preparation camp for the world's most amazing athletes!
