I’m sure I told you that if they gave medals for being a terrible 🎁 shopper, I would receive a Bronze Star Presidential Ribbon of Honor. Over the last few posts, you have been very supportive of my shopping failures. Some have offered very useful ideas. Sofia @soffenoffe described her approach based on careful planning. Over the years I worked with a lot of architects and contractors—truly master planners with vision. They told me they start a project after they do a site visit. They design based on client needs and the unique features of the location. I decided to adapt this approach as my shopping strategy when I went to the mall. I figured I’d scope out all the different stores, would see the latest in everything, and would surely see things that appealed to my family’s needs. Starting fresh in the morning, I visited every store in the Center. Of course, I needed to refuel myself with stops at the donut counter, the food court for lunch, and Starbucks for afternoon tea, and the gourmet hotdog stand for a late afternoon snack. But I redoubled my efforts by walking around the outside of the mall campus a few times to make sure I hadn’t missed anything. Good news: the health app on my phone says I did 10,895 steps, almost 5 miles, a little over 8 kilometers. Bad news: didn’t buy anything for anyone, though there were several tempting items (singing model bass fish and the singing Elvis hound dogs really caught my eye). After my fiasco looking for a present for my son, I figured out the problem: I needed a better class of store! Growing up, my daughter liked spaghetti. She especially liked to pour on the parmigiana cheese. Rubbing my hands together with glee, I saw a plan coming together. An elegant Williams Sonoma store was only a couple of hours away. I marched up to their cheese counter and proudly asked for a wheel of parmigiana cheese. They brought out a lovely 80 pound wheel directly from Italy in the Emilia Romagna region. A sweet aroma emerged that made me want to sing! Then they informed me it only cost $3,000 dollars. Realizing that I could fly to Italy for less, I...re-evaluated my goal. I thought: one of Kate’s favorite things are her goats. I found out I could get a wheel of goat cheese for $70. I felt very good, sure she’d love it! At home, I bragged to my wife I had the perfect gift! A half hour later after my wife explained how our daughter hates cheese (except for Parmesan), can’t even stand the smell, and would be sick at the very thought of it. I asked when this started. She said almost her entire life. I am the worst Christmas shopper in the world. Let me chronicle yesterday’s attempt to find a good gift. My son likes fishing. I searched high and low in a store never coming close to finding a fishing rod, reel, or even a net. Later, talking with my wife, she assured me I just picked the wrong store. Maybe she’s right. In hindsight looking for fishing equipment in a grocery store might not have been the best starting point. Though I hope the 15 cans of sardines I purchased make good bait. . I have a new strategy I’m trying this weekend and I’ll let you know how it goes Monday.
