Hi. Earlier I asked about "UC credit limitations" for a certain math IGETC class and you said that it refers to the cap on unit credits I can receive from those classes. However, only a few math IGETC classes have the "credit limitations" designation on the list, while the rest do not have that marking. What makes one class have "UC credit limitations" while another does not?
It’s usually applied to high-credit core classes, most often foundational math and English classes, generally. Those year-long math sequences can count for a lot of unit credits, so it’s a sort of weighing, in that sense. You don’t really have to worry much about it.
I was an undecided student at my CC and didn’t select my major until my 3rd year there. I have completed IGETC and did great in all my classes, but I don’t have enough of the preparatory/lower division courses for my major completed. I have applied to a UC and I feel like what I have completed is not sufficient enough to get accepted. Is this likely to happen?
There’s no way this question can be properly answered without knowing what classes you’ve taken and what major you have applied for. But even then, there is no exact answer. The approximate guideline is this: the more competitive a major (i.e. it is impacted, the admit rate is lower than average and the GPA percentiles are high), the more strongly recommended it is that you complete all or most of the required classes. Some classes for some majors are offered at few campuses, and admissions officers generally understand this. If a major has relatively few major preparation courses, though, you should have completed them no matter how non-selective it is. In any case, once you get in, you will have to take the missing lower-division classes before you can formally declare the major.
is completing iegtc more important than finishing mjaor prep courses?
Of equal importance. English 101 and 102, for example, are requirements for the IGETC, but not major prep...
It looks like I' am going to finish my major prep courses by this fall term as well as my last igetc course in the spring, even though I plan on applying in the same fall 17 fr 18. I want to transfer to a UC, will this affect my chances?
No, you don’t need to be enrolled in classes continuously before you transfer. If you finish all the coursework you need a semester or two early, go ahead and apply knowing that you’ll be considered just like everyone else -- on the merits of your coursework, essays, etc. However, if you have a significant gap between when you last took classes and applied, you will probably have to explain yourself on the application (they will give a space for this).

So I have a question about units granted because of passed AP Tests. On the TAP planner, it says I have 29.33 towards my transfer. However, if I wanted to be certified for IGETC, would I get less units from my AP tests? I checked the "AP Exams that Satisfy UC Freshmen, Transfer Admission, and IGETC" list, and it seems that if you want to certify yourself for IGETC you will have to settle for only 3 units per course. Are IGETC certification units seperate from my actual total units for transfer?
You’re right on the dot there. Indeed, the IGETC certification units and your total UC-transferable units are calculated separately, so you won’t actually be getting less units for your required 60 units needed to transfer when you’re using AP exams for your IGETC certification. For example, even if one AP exam (I’m just going to use AP Eng Lang and Comp) score is worth 3 semester units for IGETC certification, it would still be counted as 5.3 semester units towards your total unit count you would need to hit 60.
Do you have to complete IGETC by fall quarter? To complete "Area 1B: Critical Thinking-English Composition" on IGETC, EWRT 1A is a prereq class for all 3 courses for area 1B. I didn't take AP lit or take it during summer, so theres no way I can complete IGETC during the first quarter.
An old question.
No, nothing has to be completed by fall quarter. See this previous answer.
I took ap statistics in high school and my major doesnt require any math courses as a pre-req. Does this mean I dont have to take any math courses at my CC?
Luckily for you, someone just asked this last week.
Yes.
