“ this is you thinking rationally? “ from the hurt/comfort prompts
HELLO I DID!!!!!! @thedasweekend
The contract had gone sideways, which Lucanis had... anticipated. Not that he doubted Ruby de Riva's skills to get the job done, necessarily, more like... she had comically bad luck and always pushed a little too far. Which was probably why he was assigned this contract with her. To clean up whatever mess Viago's precious prodigy made.
Currently Ruby was fleeing guards, having stabbed the target when her usual route of seduction backfired and he'd gotten too eager. Lucanis sighed, following in the shadows. There was one too many to risk taking on and Ruby would be no help without her daggers.
She tripped and he winced as her knee scraped the ground. The guards pressed closer and she kicked at the closest one, yelping as he grabbed her ankle. Lucanis cursed, dropping down behind the guards, taking them out easily as Ruby clawed and bit at the one attempting to hold her. The man punched her in the jaw and she cried out. Maker, he knew she was still a beginner but supposedly she'd passed her training.
Eventually he got rid of all the guards, scooping up Ruby, who looked a little worse for wear and carrying her to a nearby safe house. He began to patch her wounds as she stared at the floor.
"What was that?" he asked, cleaning off her scraped knee.
"What was what?" she snapped.
"All of it. You realize we could have done it my way and be back in Antiva right now, right?" He wasn't trying to come off as callous; he was just quite tired of playing babysitter.
"It made sense! A quick and easy lure and then the poison would take long enough no one would even suspect either of us! It's not my fault that men always want more than they should!" She hissed as he rubbed alcohol on the broken skin.
"And biting the guard? Where were your daggers?" He raised an eyebrow.
"Couldn't reach them, had to use the tools at my disposal. Like a rational person would," she huffed.
"This is you thinking rationally?" he asked dryly, gesturing to her torn skirt and multiple scratches and bruises.
"The target is dead and neither of us died or got seriously injured, I say it was a success," she shrugged. He reached up to wipe a cut on her face, and she snatched the rag from him. "I've got it, Mom."
"Oh, shut up," he growled, walking away to clean off his knife. "Sorry I wanted to help."
"Ohhh yes because you always want to help poor old me," she snarked back, glaring at him. "The great Lucanis Dellamorte, so generous."
"I didn't ask to be put on this assignment with you! You think I'm having any fun?" He snapped back. "Maker, you are a nightmare."
"Thank you," she grinned. "Besides, aren't you the one constantly reminding me not to have fun? This is your dream contract! Only misery and murder."
He rolled his eyes, focusing back on his daggers. Ruby continued caring for her wounds in silence and the two waiting until morning to slip into the crowds and disappear, onto their next target.
